U-Haul Disaster Relief Efforts

U-Haul Offering 30 Days of Free Self-Storage and U-Box Pods for Moving and Self-Storage to Victims of the West Fertilizer Plant Explosion

U-Haul has a long-time policy of assisting those in need during natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, etc., by offering 30 days of free self-storage and U-Box pod moving and self-storage at participating U-Haul self-storage facilities on an as-available basis.

Customers with reservations in an area affected by  recent storm activity

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with those who have been adversely affected by the recent storm activity across the United States.  We have many locations that have been affected by these storms and we are working diligently to get our facilities open for business in order to service the many customer's who are needing our services.  If you have any questions about your existing reservation please contact 800-GO-UHAUL (800-468- 4285).

Disaster relief donation requests
U-Haul continues to receive hundreds of phone calls and emails from individuals and organizations requesting support with getting much needed relief items to the areas affected by Superstorm Sandy.  Because the need has been and still is so great, we are unfortunately unable to assist every individual or organization that submits a request for a donation of rental equipment to assist in these recovery efforts.   We have chosen to provide donations to and partner with the American Red Cross, the military, government agencies, local police and fire departments, and organizations we have existing relationships or partnerships with. If you feel you or your organization fits under this criteria, please email your donation request to publicrelations@uhaul.com.  Please note that Disaster Relief donation requests have up to a 72 hour response time.

If you are an evacuee or family who has personally been affected by a natural disaster and need more than the 30-days-free self-storage assistance program, we have been advised to provide you with the following instructions: Register first with FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) and then register with the American Red Cross at 1-866-GET-INFO  (438-4636).

Our community outreach

U-Haul International, Inc. has an obligation to the local communities in which we do business, and for many years we have focused on the endorsement of social programs by partnering with agencies and events that directly serve the most basic of human needs – food, clothing and shelter.   U-Haul also has a commitment to supporting many military and veteran organizations, as well as organizations that benefit the community as a whole.  U-Haul helps the organizations we support through in-kind donations of equipment, self-storage and merchandise.

U-Haul does not have a charitable foundation, formal grant or scholarship program.

Requests for donations must be submitted in writing at least three weeks prior to the event or need, and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. All requests must be submitted by a social or charitable organization with 501(c)3 status; no requests from individuals will be considered.  Any requests received outside of the three-week time frame will be automatically denied.

Your request must include:

  • Name of organization
  • Name of person requesting assistance
  • Return mailing address, email and phone number
  • Type of donation requested
  • How the donation will be used
  • For equipment, indicate: size, type, locations along with rental pick-up/drop-off dates and times
  • A copy of 501(c)3 tax information

Not eligible for donations:

  • Beauty pageants and individual competitions
  • Race teams and car clubs
  • School activities and sports teams
  • Organizations that do not benefit members of the community
  • Telephone-solicitation groups of any nature, including "for profit" companies receiving a percentage of money raised
  • Political entities
  • Use of trucks to transport animals.  U-Haul moving vans are not designed for transporting animals and do not provide for proper ventilation and airflow.  It is against the terms of the rental agreement to transport any living animal in the back of U-Haul moving vans.

Requests for the donation of a truck or trailer for ownership

U-Haul does not donate its fleet of retired trucks or trailers.  All U-Haul trucks are on a lease program; therefore, old, retired or for-sale trucks are never donated. The ownership of our rental fleet is in the form of a leasing agreement rather than true ownership. That structure prohibits us from being able to donate our equipment.

If you feel your organization meets the above criteria, please submit your detailed request by letter, fax or email.
