U-Haul Helps U-Beat the Heat on National Heat Day

PHOENIX (May 22, 2014) – Get ready for it! Brace yourselves! National Heat Day is May 24th! As the summer draws near, U-Haul, the leader in do-it-yourself moving, is providing helpful tips for moving in the summer heat.

According to U-Haul moving statistics, 17 to 20 million people may move this summer, with nearly 45 percent of all moves occurring between Memorial Day and Labor Day. As U-Haul is a Phoenix-based company, we know a thing or two about the heat, including how to make sure you and your belongings are well protected.

Tips for Moving in the Heat

H20! – As simple as it sounds, hydration is the most important thing to remember to do. Drink water! Stay away from alcoholic and caffeinated beverages as they can be dehydrating.

Take breaks. – As tempting as it sounds to make a move in record-breaking time, you will need to take breaks to cool off and rehydrate. These breaks will keep your body from overheating and keep you energized.

Seek out the shade. – Try to do as many tasks as you can in the shade. If you are stacking moving boxes outside, try to make sure they are under a tree or the shade of a garage door, etc.

Start early. – Mornings are often cooler in the summer, so try to start as early as possible to take advantage of the cooler temps. Book a reservation in advance to guarantee an early pickup time.

Set up utilities early. – About the worst thing you can do is hauling boxes into a new home that has no air conditioning. Temperatures inside a home often can be warmer than outside, especially if you are dealing with a multilevel home. Call ahead to ensure that the utilities will be on when you get to your new home.

Protect Your Belongings

With temperatures in Phoenix and even across the country reaching as high as 120 degrees in the summer, leaving your belongings outside in direct sunlight and heat exposure can cause many materials to warp, melt or fade. The best way to make sure your goods are protected from the heat is to opt for indoor, or even better, climate-controlled storage.

If your idea of escaping the heat during the summer months is to take a camping trip or spend the weekend at a nearby lake, U-Haul also offers RV and boat storage. That way when you return from your venture, you have somewhere to keep them safe.

So, if you are one of the millions of people planning to move this summer, keep these helpful tips in mind. U-Haul wants you to stay cool and enjoy your move!
