U-Haul Drops Anchor in Staten Island Community of Port Richmond

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2015) — One of the oldest neighborhoods on Staten Island is polishing its look with the new U-Haul Moving & Storage of Port Richmond store at 7 North St.

The facility, which opened for business in July, sits on 2.86 acres. It features a main two-story building and several smaller structures totaling 37,231 square feet of space. The property was previously home to Atlantic Express Transportation, a charter bus company, but was sitting vacant when U-Haul put its adaptive reuse plan into action.

Customers can rent U-Haul trucks, trailers and U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers, as well as purchase moving supplies. Construction is underway for a new showroom and 2,500 climate-controlled indoor storage units to be available within the next six months.

“When it’s complete, Port Richmond residents will have access to a full-service, state-of-the-art U-Haul storage facility,” U-Haul Company of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island president Will Wolff said. “U-Haul is so valuable and we are excited to help improve the community and bring new life to the area. This is U-Haul country, and I think we are in the right place.”

Faber Pool & Park is across the street from the U-Haul store, which is highly visible to drivers along busy Richmond Terrace.

“This U-Haul store is benefiting the community by creating jobs and giving our customers easy access to moving supplies and affordable storage,” general manager Jamar Holmes said. “An added bonus is we also have a beautiful waterfront view.”

Historically, Port Richmond was an important transportation and industrial center but was bypassed through development. In recent years, small businesses have opened and returned some commercial vitality to the neighborhood.

The acquisition of U-Haul Moving & Storage of Port Richmond was driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
