The truck we reserved was not available so we needed to take a smaller truck which did not fit all our things. This meant we had to take two trips and double our mileage, which meant double the price! We were told on arrival that the truck was not available because the person who used it before did it return it on time which would have been nice to know before so we could have searched a different location for the truck we needed .

This location was very convenient for me and the person who processed the return was clear. It's a gas station as its main business so there's a fair bit going on here. For the return, it was perfect. Less sure how it would be for a pick-up.

The rental process seemed unusual to me but I was on a deadline and I needed a truck so I went along. The U-haul agent at the Soquel Valero didn’t give me a contract to sign, only the small condition tag. That was the first thing I thought was odd. While we were gone, using the van to move my son, the Valero called several times on Saturday starting at 4:00pm, asking if we were ready to return the van. I don’t understand why he left these messages. I told him I wouldn’t be back until Sunday afternoon. I didn’t get any of these messages until we got home about 7:30 or 8:00pm on Sunday evening. When I returned the van Sunday evening, the agent was not at the Valero station and the clerk who was there did not know what to do. He called the agent at home who tried to talk the clerk through the process with mixed results. We finally got the mileage squared away and confirmed that the gas gauge was at the same level as when I picked it up (1/4 of a tank). The agent said the clerk could not give me an itemized copy of the bill but that he would email it to me later. At about this point in the process the agent said I should give the clerk $62.21 in CASH. I couldn’t use a credit or debit card, it had to be in cash. I thought this was a little strange but I did have the cash with me and that as long as the total bill was correct and I could get a receipt for the cash I supposed I could do it. But when I insisted on getting a receipt for the cash, he said to forget it and he would just charge it to the credit card I had on file. When I checked my email Monday morning and examined the bill, I was surprised and disappointed to see two incorrect charges. The first was for 4 gallons of gas at $22.00. In actuality, there was a little more gas in the tank when I returned it than there was when I picked it up. The second was a cleaning charge for $50.00. The van was perfectly clean when I brought it back and I’m sure they didn’t have to do anything to clean it for the next rental. When I went to see him Monday morning to question these charges, he did not want to change anything at first, then he said he would remove the gas charge but not the cleaning charge. When I pointed out that the van was clean, he said he would still not remove the charge, but he would just call it something else. I thought this was pretty high-handed given the strange way he handled the rental. We got into a heated argument and he asked me to leave. I told him I was going to contact the credit card company and dispute the charge and that I was going to report the odd circumstances of the rental to U-Haul and I left. I did contact my credit card company and I am disputing the bill. The total charge with the two incorrect items came to $278.19. If the bill is reduced by $72.00 to $206.19, I will be more than willing to pay it. Please email me to respond to this situation so that we can get it settled.
