For starters, get the staff off their phones when customers, like me, are in the store trying to leave my car for scheduled services. They don't know what they are doing with the systems such as processing a Point of Sale / CC transaction. THEN an hour later I get a call that my car cannot "safely be wired for trailer lighting." and come get it. THEN 2 hours later I get another call that says "The car can be wired safely after all." and will be ready by end of day. I went to pick it up and saw that it was a very amateurish wiring installation with wiring expected to be mashed between tailgate and car when closed hanging out the back. How long will that last....safely? The whole experience was terrible and certainly not up to my normal experience with U-Hauls where we have lived. This location is where my in-laws live and we were visiting. Trust me, we'll avoid this location going forward. Plenty of other UHaul Service Center providers to choose from.

David DThe first thing I would do with any vehicle is research and make sure that you are able to install a hitch and wire it properly before you have the customer bring the vehicle in at which point all that they can do is bolt a hitch on the back that literally takes 15 minutes charge you $100 for it and give you a ball and receiver as an apology, there would have been no issue if it wasn't a bait and switch I would have chose to install the hitch myself and have it wired afterwards so I won't be out $350. They can bolt shit on a car that I can vouch for above and beyond that... You might want to do the research yourself

I would improve thee areas though: 1) allow a customer to split payments. For example $200 from one credit card and $319.67 from a second card. 2) ,I was purchasing a ball and the part that goes into the hitch receiver. I asked how high the hitch ball should be off the ground. They said we know when looking at it. Of course it depends upon what is begin towed, so I specifically asked,how high off the ground for your 5 by 7 trailer. They could not tell me. I asked,if not used can I exchange it for a different size."No" they replied.I will be using the hitch to tow a rented U-haul trailer and if told that I have t buy another ball,receiver would upset me. Why not have a simple chart for all U-hail trailers and a typical one for boats and other items? Why have me leave wondering if I will need to purchase a new one when I rent a U-haul trailer? 3) I made an appointment for 11 AM on a Thursday 2 weeks ago, but this was changed to the day before, Wednesday at8 AM Why? Fortunately I could change it to my preferred Thursday at 11 AM
JAMES OThe trailer was in good shape functionally, but the inside was dirty. The staff was debating with the manager who should actually go outside and hook up the trailer which is very unprofessional. When I returned the trailer, they didn't check it in so I was receiving notices that I hadn't returned it. It took four days and three phone calls to the main number - waiting on hold each time - before the issue was resolved. The local store was supposed to call me after two of those calls to the main number and they never did. The value of my missed work chasing this issue made this a very expensive rental.

Robert LMy main complaint is your phone service and prompts. I have no complaint about the work. But your phone tree is awful and it is impossible to get a human to help. I just needed to call the shop and find out if my car was ready to pick up and it was impossible. I finally just gave up and drove over there after several hours not knowing what I would find . When I called, I kept getting bumped to the national system with a bunch of prompts and offers to download apps, none of which was relevant. You need the opportunity at some point in the litany to connect with a human, if none of the prompts are relevant or helpful who can help, The scheduling of the work and the work and shop itself seemed good
Paul HTruck was dirty and stunk inside. When I returned it they claimed I left a scuff mark and charged me $155 dollars. They tried to claim video was to foggy to see if it anything was done to it after it took 3 hrs to check it in . Disappointed and horrifying experience

JAMESJOSEPH MMy only feedback that I feel strongly about improving the policy for handling tolls on long-distance drives. PLEASE make sure you have clear policy and inform your staff of it. I asked the MANAGER at the Ann Arbor store as I was picking up the truck how tolls would be handled - would I pay cash, is there a transponder, etc. He explained that UHaul uses a license plate reader and that I should use EasyPass lane. Well, exiting the Ohio Turnpike in the EasyPass lane was a dumpster fire with your U-Haul truck at the center of it. Traffic backed up behind me until toll agent came over and explained that the Ohio Turnpike has no such thing for U-Haul and collected $24 in cash from me. I was able to proceed but I received the ire of the drivers behind me in differing forms of road rage for the next mile or so. Other than that, it was a great experience.

Matthew TWhen I placed the reservation I included dollies as part of the reservation. When I picked up the van I was informed none were available. This was frustrating because renting the van involved moving a large item and I ended up having to buy dollies to complete the task. I asked if any consideration could be made and was told it could be considered at the return, but there was no discount showing at the conclusion.

Devan U | Overall ExperienceThe 1/8" input jack on the stereo was mangled and unusable. Also, right side windshield washer sent the fluid over the cab and therefore didn't clean the window. The biggest problem was the mileage estimate. I got charged an additional $20 for being "over the allotted mileage". I don't know how this was calculated, but was well short of my distance. Chicago is a big place, so how did it pick an arbitrary amount? The mileage estimate was never discussed at pickup, was supposed to be a flat 2 day rental for one way transit. And I only used it for a single day. Plus, I originally had the truck booked at a station walking distance from home. A day before, got a message that I had to pick it up from the furthest station from my house. That added 10 miles right there. Another way to gouge people unfairly, will look at alternatives for future moving needs. U-Haul wouldn't credit the amount.

Installer Zack Pasttoria did a great job: - Clearly communicated which areas of the vehicle's underbody shroud need to be trimmed to accommodate hitch installation; - The installation took about 1 hour while I waited.

When it was my turn in line, he assigned me a unit (1127, I think). When I went out to the unit, it already had a chrome lock on it. It was already occupied. I went back inside and waited 20 minutes for him to finish with a customer. 4. When it was my turn again, he searched on the computer then told me he doesn't have any units. I told him that I had a reservation and asked how can they not have any units if I have a reservation. He then told me that they were over-sold and that since my reservation was free that I don't have a unit. My mind was absolutely blown. I told him that doesn't make any sense at all. I said that the Uhaul website offered me a free month's rental on a confirmed reservation for a unit. I told him that the Uhaul website didn't say anything about being oversold or that my reservation was pending or on standby for a unit to come available. I told him that the Uhaul website didn't say that if I accept the free month's rental that I would be put on standby instead of having a confirmed reservation for an existing unit. I told him that this was extremely bad business. 5. I asked him to cancel my reservation. He told me he already did. I have had a long-standing relationship with Uhaul at other locations around the country. This, by far, was the absolute worst. It was embarrassing. I'll let you guys do the analysis of my review and try to sort out how to resolve your own issues. Fortunately, there were other storage companies with available space on short notice without a reservation. I went with Cube Smart down the street. Their prices were reasonable, and their staff was extremely helpful. Thank you for allowing me to submit a review and report of what happened last week. Was given a storage unit only to find it already had a lock on it... and then this happened a second time... and each time took way too long to figure out. The staff were overwhelmed and poorly managed by the manager on site. What should have been a 30 min MAX experience turned into 1.5hrs of my time. It seemed like they were also missing a truck, which contributed to the disorganized chaos.

dana T | Overall ExperienceMy original reservation wasn't available, and the office was unable to honor the original price of my storage unit - I was forced to pay nearly twice what my original rate was. I'm likely to call the customer service hotline to see if something can be done, e.g., a free month, a lower monthly rate, etc. I made the reservation more than two months before it started - you should change your system so that it doesn't allow new reservations if it's unlikely there will be space available on the start date.

Katy S | Overall ExperienceWhen I arrived my unit had a zip-tie on it and no lock inside, which was the only thing I needed to actually get started. I had to go in the office and ask for one, which makes the online no-contact reservation idea pointless. I was able to figure it out, but the system of arming and disarming alarms at one panel, and opening the building doors at a different panel, was very confusing. I heard one alarm go off while I was moving in, and I'm sure that happens all the time. The unit numbering is also very confusing, and it took me a while to find the correct building (I'm in the 1600s). Going from the 1400s to the 2000s, and having the 1600s out front, makes no sense. Finally, the stairs to the upstairs units have a lip on them that makes it much harder to pull a dolly up them.

Tried again, hold for 25 minutes then routed to corporate answering service. They claim some random reason why the Uhaul website was wrong for the free month. They got through to the office in minutes. I was promised a reversal of charges. The original charge to card was not canceled. It went through. Received email of credit, but it hasn't hit my credit card. This free month seems like such a sham. Traveling out of state having bogus charges on my card is bad business and inconvenient during economic mayhem due to the virus. I'm disgusted.

Donovan C | Overall ExperienceDear Austin Brown, I've had half a dozen excellent experiences w State St. Uhaul renting vehicles/trailers over the years (at least one of them directly with you), so when I needed storage space, it was a no-brainer, but I was sadly disappointed in the service I got. I reserved a 10x15 space online, and went to get access to it the following week (Tue Aug 4), Michael Fender was rude and exasperated to start, and let me know that the website's listed hours of access were wrong, requiring me to pay $10/mo more; and though it's not listed anywhere on the website, I had to provide or buy a discus-style lock. So far, not great, but workable. Then, my access card didn't work, and when I went back to the front to get it re-programmed, exasperation and rudeness increased. Then, when I finally got to the unit, there was a lock on it. After visually confirming, we went back to the front desk, and Michael searched for another 10x15 unit, but there were only 10x10 (too small for my needs) and 10x20 (too expensive for my budget). He was willing to waive the 24-hour access fee, and give me the lock for free, but I was only going to keep 24-hour access for a month anyway, so that didn't nearly make me whole for the difference of the price of the 10x15 and the 10x20. His only solution at that point was to direct me to the next available 10x15 unit *in Westland* which didn't work for that day (i needed to be somewhere *with my vehicle emptied* in 20 minutes), nor did it work for me in the long-run, being 25 minutes each way too far from my home base. I was understandably frustrated and rather than listen to my frustration, and acknowledge that, he sharply told me that he would not adjust the price to fit my needs, nor could the manager. As someone who manages people myself, and has had to deal with corporate bureaucracy, *I* would want the opportunity to address a repeat-customer's frustration myself, rather than risk losing their referrals and business forever, having been dismissed rudely by a front line worker. There was a line of 7 people and one worker, who do to policies such as requiring a visual check when someone vacates their unit, meant this worker had to walk all over the property as he was helping customers. He and the customers would have benefited from another staff person being available
