The Pachyderm Test

At the completion of the "Big Dig" construction project, officials invited 14 elephants from the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus to cross the Leonard P. Zakim - Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge to demonstrate the strength of the bridge.  The elephants, weighing in at 112,000 pounds, successfully completed their march across the span on October 15, 2002.  In view of an enthusiastic audience of onlookers, the new bridge was officially declared sound and ready for travel.
