Our philanthropy policy

U-Haul International, Inc. has an obligation to the local communities in which we do business, and for many years we have focused on the endorsement of social programs, agencies and events that directly serve the most basic of human needs – food, clothing and shelter. U-Haul helps these organizations through in-kind donations of equipment and merchandise.

U-Haul does not have a charitable foundation or formal grant, scholarship or sponsorship program.

Requests for donations must be submitted in writing at least three weeks prior to the event or need, and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. All requests must be submitted by a social or charitable organization with 501(c)3 status; no requests from individuals will be considered. Any requests received outside of the three-week time frame will be denied.

Your request must include:

  • Name of organization
  • Name of person requesting assistance
  • Return mailing address and phone number
  • Type of donation requested
  • How the donation will be used
  • For equipment, indicate: size, type, locations and preferred dates
  • A copy of 501(c)3 tax information

Not eligible for donations:

  • Beauty pageants and individual competitions
  • Race teams and car clubs
  • School activities and sports teams
  • Organizations that do not benefit members of the community
  • Telephone-solicitation groups of any nature, including "for profit" companies receiving a percentage of money raised
  • Political entities

All U-Haul trucks are on a lease program; therefore, old, retired or for-sale trucks are never donated. The ownership of our rental fleet is in the form of a leasing agreement rather than true ownership. That structure prohibits us from being able to donate our equipment.

If you feel your organization meets the above criteria, please submit your detailed request by letter, fax or email.

Disaster relief

Our hearts and thoughts are with those who have been affected by a natural disaster. U-Haul has a long-time policy of assisting those in need during natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, etc., by offering 30 days of free storage at participating U-Haul self-storage facilities on an as-available basis.

In addition to the 30-days-free self-storage assistance program, U-Haul works directly with the American Red Cross, the military and local police and fire departments in their efforts to get much-needed relief supplies to areas affected by natural disasters. Because the need is so great, this is where we have chosen to focus our corporate efforts.

If you are an evacuee or family who has personally been affected by a natural disaster and need more than the 30-days-free self-storage assistance program, we have been advised to provide you with the following instructions: Register first with FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) and then register with the American Red Cross at 1-866-GET-INFO (438-4636).

If you are an individual who would like to help get aid to an affected area, the American Red Cross has specifically asked us to encourage monetary donations only, as this is the best and most efficient way to get relief to those in need. Managing the flow of unsolicited donations hinders the effort to provide disaster relief in a timely manner. To make a donation, please visit www.redcross.org or call 1-800-HELP-NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish).
