Those who look for Champ

Cryptozoologists are researchers who study and search for such unknown, legendary, or supposedly extinct creatures. Although science has not proven the survival of these creatures, it is possible that some are still living. Several groups and individuals have taken part in the search for Champ over the years. The following two groups are leading the field in current Champ research.

Lake ChamplainChamp Quest

Champ Quest is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding, identifying and protecting the large reptiles known collectively as Champ, who have chosen Lake Champlain as their home.

Champ Quest is headed by Dennis Jay Hall, who claims to have seen Champ on 19 different occasions. On one of the sightings, according to Hall, he saw two "Champs," one of them being a baby Champ. Hall runs Champ Quest himself and works with approximately a dozen other people that regularly search for Champ.

Lake Champlain Phenomena Investigation Group

Joseph W. Zarzynski, a retired social studies teacher who has been researching Champ for 16 years, heads the phenomena investigation group. He believes the creature exists and has written books on Champ. In 1979, Zarzynski and Jim Kennard of Rochester Engineering Laboratories used high-tech sonar to search for Champ. What they found were readings that indicated the presence of a 10 to 15-foot long moving object in the water.

Zarzynski also searches for Champ by looking for carcass. He believes that such a carcass would prove that the creature is a real animal, without having to endanger the living Champ.
