Real Estate Reuse: U-Haul Transforming Office Space into Self-Storage Facility

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 16, 2017) — U-Haul® sustainability initiatives are being applied through the adaptive reuse of an old commercial office space at 6805 Corporate Drive in Colorado Springs.

U-Haul acquired the 201,515 square-foot building, now U-Haul Moving & Storage at Tiffany Square, on March 9. Renovations will produce more than 400 indoor climate-controlled self-storage units of varying sizes with state-of-the-art security features.

By reusing the space, U-Haul prevents 597 tons of metal manufacturing and transportation from being used; avoids 5,290 tons of new concrete pours; keeps 6,020 tons of construction and demolition debris out of landfills; and stops 4,530,488 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere.

The store is currently offering U-Haul Truck Share 24/7?, trailers, moving supplies, and towing equipment and accessories. Professional hitch installation, U-Box portable moving and storage containers, and covered RV, boat and vehicle storage are coming soon along with self-storage.

“This property had a bad reputation because it was always changing and nothing really stuck,” said Dave Hellmers, U-Haul Company of Southern Colorado president. “With U-Haul now serving the community here, it will provide stability and convenience to an area that needs it.”

Contact U-Haul Moving & Storage at Tiffany Square at (719) 722-2296 or stop by to visit general manager Matthew Stempson and his team. Hours of operation are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and Saturday; 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Reserve equipment at uhaul.com or contact Reservations at 1-800-GO-UHAUL.

Hellmers expects to employ 15 U-Haul Team Members when the facility is fully operational. U-Haul will look to hire locally to promote job growth within the Colorado Springs community. Local contractors are always encouraged to bid on construction work.

“Utilizing this space will provide a much-needed product and service to this part of Colorado Springs while also helping the community with its goal to be more sustainable,” Hellmers said.

The recent acquisition of the Colorado Springs facility was driven by U-Haul sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

The arrival of U-Haul Truck Share 24/7 is modernizing the moving industry by offering self-service and live verify technology to enhance customer and community safety. This technology allows for the self-pick-up and self-return of U-Haul trucks to be done on a smartphone at any hour – day or night. Program membership is free once customers create uhaul.com accounts.
