MONCTON, N.B. (Aug. 30, 2018) — U-Haul® will host a grand-opening event on Sept. 9 to introduce its two-story indoor self-storage facility at U-Haul Moving & Storage at Mapleton at 1106 Mountain Road.

Local residents and media attending the event from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. can take a behind-the-scenes tour, enjoy a free BBQ lunch, view the ceremonial ribbon-cutting and receive U-Haul giveaways. The ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served on a first-come basis.

“Moncton is one of the few Maritime cities to register a population increase in recent years, and it is the second largest Metropolitan area in the Maritimes,” U-Haul Company of Atlantic Canada president Tracey Higgs said. “With diverse demographics and endless opportunities for work and play, Moncton is growing. U-Haul needs to follow suit to meet the demands of this community.”

U-Haul Moving & Storage at Mapleton opened in a limited capacity in September 2016, offering truck and trailer sharing and moving supplies out of a temporary showroom.

Then the real work began. More than two years of cleanup and renovations to the former Canadian Tire facility yielded a new 52,732-square-foot facility with more than 750 indoor, climate-controlled self-storage lockers at affordable price points. The recent acquisition of the Moncton property was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-building materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

By repurposing the former Canadian Tire building, U-Haul prevented the use of 81 tons of metal manufacturing and transportation (the amount of steel used to make 90 passenger cars); avoided 3,753 tons of new concrete pours (enough to create 135 kilometers of concrete blocks); kept 3,894 tons of building and demolition debris out of landfills (avoiding 165 dump trucks traveling 5,579 kilometers); and stopped 921,488 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere (the carbon emissions of 157 large SUVs or pickup trucks for one year).

“This is our second, and our largest, location in Moncton,” Higgs said. “Our original store has been serving Moncton residents for 31 years and was the first to be opened in Atlantic Canada. As it continues to serve the city, it will be able to lean on our new facility, which will increase our self-storage footprint by over 3,000 percent.
