Moving Season in Kansas: U-Haul to Open First Leavenworth Store
Facility to include 500 self-storage rooms with climate-controlled options
LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (April 11, 2019) — U-Haul® is revealing details for its adaptive reuse of a vacated former Kmart® store that will be transformed into the Company’s first full-service facility in Leavenworth. U-Haul acquired the 12.91-acre property on March 6.
U-Haul Moving & Storage of Fort Leavenworth at 4820 S. 4th St. is currently operating out of a temporary showroom, offering truck and trailer sharing along with moving supplies.
Extensive renovations will soon render more than 500 climate-controlled indoor self-storage units with high-tech security features at affordable price points. U-Haul Remote 24/7® access for self-storage customers, U-Box® portable storage containers, towing accessories and professional hitch installation, and more will also be available at the 87,113-square-foot building.
“Leavenworth was the very first city that was settled in Kansas, and has been a hub of activity and growth ever since,” said Gary Wittkopp, U-Haul Company of Northern Kansas president. “Residents here are in need a reliable moving and self-storage facility. U-Haul is pleased to serve this growing community.”

The recent acquisition of the former Kmart store was driven by U-Haul Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-building materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
“This U-Haul facility is less than 10 miles from the oldest, continuously active military reservation west of the Mississippi River,” Wittkopp said. “We look forward to serving our soldiers moving to and from Fort Leavenworth, as well as the longtime residents here.”
Wittkopp expects to employ eight or more Team Members when the store is fully operational. U-Haul will look to hire locally to promote growth within the Leavenworth community.
