The Challenging Enigma of the Kensington Runestone Now Revealed on 2,300 U-Haul Moving Vans
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. (May 13, 2011) — U-Haul today announced the release of 2,300 new 20-foot moving vans showcasing the Kensington Runestone, a stone tablet that tells of North American exploration more than a century before it was originally believed to have occurred. As one of North America’s greatest unsolved mysteries, the challenging enigma of the Kensington Runestone has puzzled historians for more than 110 years. Did explorers leave clues that could rewrite history? This newest SuperGraphic featuring the Kensington Runestone and honoring Minnesota will challenge everyone to learn more about Viking adventures, and decide for themselves whether or not the proof is etched in stone.
“From start to finish this has been an exciting project,” exclaimed Julie Blank, executive director, Runestone Museum. “Soon there will be 2,300 new U-Haul trucks with a SuperGraphic featuring the Kensington Runestone piquing the interest of thousands of people. We invite those who see the trucks or view the story online to visit the museum and see the runestone for themselves. We are honored to be representing the state of Minnesota as part of the U-Haul ’Venture Across America‘ Campaign.”
At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2011, immediately following breakfast with Big Ole, U-Haul will unveil the Minnesota SuperGraphic as its “Venture Across America” Campaign visits the Runestone Museum in Alexandria, Minnesota. Guests will have the opportunity to hear from local dignitaries and representatives from the Runestone Museum, as well as enjoy a variety of other festivities during the 2011 “Awake the Lakes Celebration.” The first 1,000 guests visiting the U-Haul exhibit also will receive a free U-Haul commemorative T-shirt and informational booklet featuring the Kensington Runestone.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Runestone Museum to commemorate the Kensington Runestone and the enduring mystery of its origin,” exclaimed Shawn Odden, president, U-Haul Company of Fargo. “Now, people all over North America will have the privilege of seeing and learning more about this mysterious stone tablet, and Viking adventures that could quite possibly rewrite history. The Kensington Runestone is considered one of history’s ultimate mysteries and Minnesotans can be proud that their state is home to such a special piece of our country’s heritage.”
U-Haul has been decorating its moving trucks with vibrant images featuring distinctive features of U.S. states and Canadian provinces since 1988, with the launch of the “America’s Moving Adventure” and “Canada’s Moving Adventure” U-Haul SuperGraphics Campaigns. The newest SuperGraphics are part of the “Venture Across America” Campaign that highlights little-known facts about North America. Nearly 200 different images have been created since the SuperGraphics Program began. They can be viewed online at uhaul.com/supergraphics.
