U-Haul Expands Reach in Johnson City with New Store

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2016) — U-Haul acquired and renovated the former Devon Self Storage facility at 621 Field St., transforming it into a new store for do-it-yourself movers in Broome County.

U-Haul Moving & Storage of Oakdale sits on a 3.45-acre parcel and includes seven buildings with 57,680 square feet of net rentable storage space. The location has been completely repaved with upgrades to the interior and exterior storage lighting.

“This has been a major undertaking because of all the improvements,” general manager Sandra Thibodaux said. “What customers have noticed is that U-Haul is here to stay and improve an area that has been deeply impacted by years of flooding. Customers and neighboring businesses have expressed their gratitude for U-Haul moving in and giving this store a needed facelift.”

Customers have access to 499 storage units: 160 indoor units and 239 outdoor drive-up units. There are U-Haul truck and trailer rentals, truck sales, towing equipment, moving supplies and boxes, U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers and more available at the location.

“We have been serving the moving needs of the Johnson City area since 1978,” said Will Cintas, U-Haul Company of Eastern New York president. “This new location gives us the opportunity to provide a better product and service to the community.”

The store is conveniently located next to State Route 17 and Wegmans grocery, and is across the street from Oakdale Mall. Binghamton University is less than two miles away.

“We didn’t have a storage center near Binghamton University,” Cintas noted. “We are happy to be in the neighborhood and serve the local area as well as the college students.”

The acquisition of the Johnson City facility was driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
