U-Haul Meeting Storage Demand with Opening of New Akron Store

AKRON, Ohio (March 16, 2016) — U-Haul Company’s adaptive reuse of a former grocery warehouse has led to the recent opening of U-Haul Moving & Storage at Tallmadge Avenue at 800 E. Tallmadge Ave.

The property features a two-story brick building on 2.12 acres of land and offers 134,756 square feet of space. The abandoned building was previously home to Acmes Fresh Market’s original warehouse and store for the area.

“I’m excited about the opening of this store, because I am literally getting to watch the location grow before my eyes,” general manager Jon Hartman said. “We have new additions to the fleet, and customers are excited about the storage addition we are building.”

U-Haul acquired the property in August 2014 and opened for business four months ago.

Customers have access to U-Haul truck and trailer rentals, moving supplies, 105 indoor climate-controlled storage units, towing equipment and hitch installation, U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers, propane and much more.

Construction is currently wrapping up on the addition of 700 more indoor storage units as well as 150 RV, boat and vehicle storage spots available for rent.

“We were able to take a historical building and make it into a new state-of-the-art storage facility for the community,” said Alissa Nider, U-Haul Company of Akron president. “We have had a presence in this area for more than 20 years, and we’re just happy to add more services for the residents of Akron.”

Hartman noted there has been a tremendous amount of positive customer feedback since the store’s Nov. 21 opening.

“I have had people call our location the Taj Mahal of U-Haul stores,” Hartman said. “Many of our customers have not been to our location in well over a year (when it was a grocery), so they see great improvement, which insights repeat business.”

The acquisition of U-Haul Moving & Storage on Highway 64 was driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
