U-Haul Reuse of Storage Facility Meets Needs of Smithtown

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (June 9, 2016) — U-Haul sustainability initiatives have led to the reuse of an existing storage facility and the recent opening of U-Haul Storage at Bellemeade Avenue.

The property at 29 Bellemeade Ave. features a two-story colonial-style building that offers about 41,000 square feet of space. The building was previously home to Colonial Self Storage.

“This is a beautiful old building and we’re looking forward to taking it to the next level,” said Michael Nadraus, U-Haul Company of Long Island president. “The renovations are going to lighten up the facility and provide a really clean, safe and secure place where people can store their belongings at a very affordable price.”

U-Haul acquired the property in December and opened for business in February. The industry leader in do-it-yourself moving and self-storage now offers 300 indoor climate-controlled self-storage units, truck and cargo van rentals, moving supplies, boxes and much more.

“I’ve been at this facility since 2010, and it’s been through a great change since U-Haul moved in,” general manager Michelle Miller-Dixon said. “The town’s residents have been extremely welcoming of the change. It’s been a pleasant experience working for an organization that values its Team Members.”

Nadraus noted the property’s lawn has been hydroseeded and that over 400 lightbulbs on site have been replaced to enhance safety and appearance.

“I have met all the neighbors and they are very excited for U-Haul to be here,” Nadraus added. “We offer green programs they go crazy for like Take A Box, Leave A Box. Plus, we retained the whole crew from Colonial Self Storage, and the customers really love them.”

The acquisition of the Smithtown facility was driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
