U-Haul at Baseline Road Repurposes Abandoned Grocery for More Storage

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (June 14, 2016) — U-Haul will soon be offering additional self-storage options in southwestern Little Rock thanks to the acquisition and adaptive reuse of a former Harvest Foods grocery store at 8900 Geyer Springs Road.

The new U-Haul property, which will be known as U-Haul Storage at Baseline Road, is just two blocks from U-Haul Moving & Storage at Baseline Road, a location that has been serving Little Rock since 1978.

The added facility will supplement the original store’s self-storage options and will be operated remotely by general manager Chris Crawford to allow for 24-hour customer access. Construction on the Geyer Springs Road location is underway. The 51,386-square-foot building set on a 4-acre parcel should be ready to accommodate customers later this summer.

“There is a high demand for more climate-controlled, high-security storage in this area,” U-Haul Company of Arkansas president Ken Vadnais said. “We’re adding 597 self-storage rooms and an 8,000-square-foot U-Box warehouse for our Little Rock customers.

“This building had sat empty for 10 years and was becoming an eyesore. We are proud to clean it up and show the community that we are willing to invest in an older part of the city to give it life again.”

When construction is finished, U-Haul Storage at Baseline Road will serve as the hub for U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers in Arkansas.

“The size of the location is going to give us a great opportunity to expand the U-Box program here,” Crawford said. “U-Box has really taken off in the last couple of years. It will be exciting to see even more customers realize the versatility and benefits that come with renting a U-Box container.”

Crawford noted that the original store’s self-storage occupancy for its 372 rooms is nearly full, creating the need for another facility.

The acquisition of the new Little Rock location was driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing building reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and help cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
