DAYTON, Ohio (June 21, 2016) — U-Haul has repurposed a former shopping plaza at 3936 Salem Ave. to bring new self-storage options to Montgomery County residents.
U-Haul Moving & Storage of Harrison Township has been serving the community at its Salem Avenue location since 1992, but the addition of this adjoining property offers a much-needed solution to the storage demands of U-Haul customers.
“Before we acquired this property, there weren’t any self-storage units available at this location,” said Mark Quinn, U-Haul Company of Dayton president. “Now we have constructed 138 indoor climate-controlled storage units to offer our customers.”
Self-storage customers have access to 24-hour electronic key-card entry, state-of-the-art security features and units at varying sizes and price points. The 10,026-square-foot acquisition is less than two miles from State Route 49, where surrounding residential areas had been lacking dry, safe and secure self-storage at affordable rates.
“Self-storage is a booming business with a lot of our customers,” general manager Matt Barnhill noted. “There wasn’t a whole lot of storage in this area until we stepped in and met a need.”

The acquisition of the Harrison Township addition in November 2014 was driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. “This building has been a myriad of things over the years, and it was beginning to look rundown after sitting abandoned,” Barnhill said. “It’s exciting to give this old building a new purpose. We’re going to be able to serve more customers. People already love it. My local move average is only six miles, so our residents like a facility that’s nearby and convenient to them.”
