Self-Storage Expansion at U-Haul of Avondale Now Complete

DECATUR, Ga. (Dec. 6, 2016) — U-Haul Moving & Storage of Avondale at 3653 Memorial Drive is pleased to announce the addition of 646 indoor climate-controlled self-storage units.

Do-it-yourself customers in DeKalb County have graciously welcomed the new facility to meet their needs since U-Haul purchased it in 2015.

“We have another U-Haul facility four miles up Memorial Drive that is completely occupied with regards to our self-storage units,” U-Haul Company of Central Georgia president Jason Petty said. “This community needed more self-storage and we’re happy to deliver.”

The 13.75-acre property features 145,978 square feet of space and is directly across the street from the Wal-Mart® Supercenter. Located in Avondale Square, the building was constructed in 1969 and has housed many businesses as a shopping plaza.

“The best part about taking over this building is that U-Haul will be able to fill the entire 13 acres in order to serve more and more customers at a lower cost,” general manager Raquel Bryan said. “We will give this community much-needed services and peace of mind in knowing a well-known industry leader is here to stay.”

The recent acquisition of the Avondale facility was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

By reusing the shopping plaza, U-Haul prevented 435 tons of metal manufacturing and transportation from being used, avoided 8,775 tons of new concrete pours, kept 9,389 tons of construction and demolition debris out of landfills, and stopped 5,291,312 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere.

“U-Haul is a responsible business leader in the field of sustainability,” Petty said. “We are proud to take an existing building and breathe new life into it.”

U-Haul is a proud sponsor of the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day. The Company is honoring Pearl Harbor survivors and World War II veterans by supporting the events in Oahu commemorating the Dec. 7, 1941 attack. Founded by a WWII Navy veteran and his wife, U-Haul makes veterans a focus of its charitable works and has been recognized repeatedly as one of the top veteran-friendly employers in the U.S.
