A housewarming party can be one of the most exciting aspects of moving into your new home. But, with all of the commotion that comes with moving; unpacking, decorating, and getting organized, it can be tough to find the time to get it planned. Luckily, we’ve laid it all out for you, step by step. Follow the steps of the list below, and before you know it- you’ll have planned your housewarming party. Get the champagne ready!

Step 1: the guest list: The first step to hosting any party is to create your guest list. You want to think about whether you want this to be a large party or an intimate gathering. Will you be inviting just your closest friends or family and distant acquaintances as well? Making the guest list will help you set the stage for the rest of the planning process.

Step 2: the menu: Now, it’s time to choose whether you want to have a few self-serve snacks, such as dips and finger foods, or an all-out sit down dinner. Mostly, this will depend on your guest list length and your budget, as well as the time of day. If you opt to only serve snacks, schedule the party to begin at a time between meals; for example, 2 pm, after lunch, or 8 pm, after dinner. If you choose to serve dinner, then consider getting the meal catered, or prepare something that will not keep you in the kitchen all evening.

Step 3: invitations: Once you have the guest list and menu details ironed out, it’s time to invite your guests. Nowadays, most people are connected online and check their email regularly; so, rather than sending out snail-mail invites, consider an e-invitation. This will be quicker, less expensive, and more convenient for your guests. My favorite service is evite.com, where guests can view the event details, RSVP, and comment on the event.

Step 4: shopping: As the party date approaches, you’ll need to make a trip to the store for supplies. The most important thing when it comes to shopping is to make a list! Take inventory of what you already have on hand for the party, and compare that with what you need. Include all of the ingredients to make your meal or appetizers, as well as beverages, mixing ingredients, napkins, toilet paper, and any other items you foresee your party guests or yourself needing. Making your list in advance will help you stay focused and avoid stress when you get to the store.

Step 5: preparation: “When it comes to the few days leading up to your party, begin to clean and prepare you home. Make sure your new abode is tidy and neat, as guests will likely want the “grand tour”. Also, make sure to do any preparation for your meals and snacks in advance if you can. This will help keep things running smoothly the day of the party. Finally, make sure the restroom and kitchen are stocked full of the items your guests will need most of, such as toilet paper, paper towels, and extra utensils.

Step 6: ENJOY: This is a fun occasion for you and your friends! Savor these first moments in your new home, and take it all in. These are memories that can last a lifetime!
