James W | First ImpressionsBE AWARE U-Haul storage rental I rented 2 storage units from the U-Haul at 2230 N Roan in Johnson City, TN A year ago we sold our farm and rented 2 units in their storage facility. We paid a month ahead at that time. Each month for the 2 units we paid $255.00. In the winter we also bought all of our propane, several hundreds of dollars. We have also rented vehicles from them multiple times. We just emptied the units yesterday. I was billed earlier this week for one of the rentals. I thought I would get the money back for the unused portion of the rent. I WAS WRONG!!! It's a shame that they feel the need to make people pay a month ahead for the rental but refuse to give them their money back for early cancellation. In the past year I have paid them over $3000. All I wanted back was around $150 for unused rent time. This is a terrible example of customer service...and fair business. I highly recommend Stowaway @ 3300 Brown's Mill Rd Johnson City TN. I was running late to another event I had scheduled, so I conveniently forgot to slide the card. Now I’m back here waiting AGAIN with my car so full that we can barely move and I am denied access. Called the number on the card, no luck. Called the number for after hours just to receive a voice mail. Closing my account here after this month.

Then they threatened to charge me another 100 for vehicle cleanup if I did not take my trash with me. Thos is fquery on am epic scale.

I unable to return to lock it back, I spent nearly $50 to FedEx UHaul the key so it could be locked securely. In reality, it was just that I placed the lock on the second hole. It was properly locked to begin with. Grr....

I would have been highly upset if I would have got there and not had my 10x15 unit.

Ralph Y | First ImpressionsThey get “below average” rating from me because they were not able to provide the storage unit that was promised to me prior to my arrival from FL with a 20-ft uhaul moving truck full of the family belongings. Instead of one 15x10 unit that I reserved, I had to settle for three 5x10 units! Most real full size furniture would not even fit inside 5x10! The administration was like “we don’t know what happened - this is all we can do”. This facility maybe too massive for this group to manage effectively. In my opinion the storage building - old Lowes store converted to two level warehouse - is not suitable for the purpose of individual storage. A single elevator is in the front of the building. To get to some units in the back you would literally have walk and push carts through corridors 100+ yards long with several 90 degree turns. It was clean overall and the staff was very friendly.

I called the facility twice prior to my arrival and they assured me that my unit was available and ready... Despite all that when i actually brought the 20-ft truck there in a late afternoon, they told me that there were no storage units of that size (or larger) available!... I had to unload into 3 (!) little spaces instead of the one reserved... A day or two later I sent an email to the regional manager complaining about the treatment . Of course I am still waiting for any response.

Zero care given to this screw up on their part or the fact we packed an entire house to fit a 10x15. Had to deconstruct furniture that was not in any way meant to be deconstructed. Found ROACHES! staff knew and literally shrugged and walked away when I told them. General manager cared even less when I emailed him. Here is his response: “Darby, We had someone move in with an obvious roach issue, which we are in the process of working on Darby. The person was evicted. Darby, we have been spraying daily and have had professional pest company out to continue to address the issue. Unfortunately Darby this can happen as people from all walks of life use self storage, not just ours. Evicting people and continuing our pest control to fix is our recourse. That’s my answer to you Darby. If you feel as if you need to take the route you said Darby then we will leave further communication to that route.” My “route” was to increase my renters insurance and contact my attorney when I return to my bug infested unit and my nice belongings are ruined. Now, it will include contacting corporate.

She was like a breath of fresh air after very negative, costly,and unprofessional experience we had at facilities in Bristol on State St..We.made a reservation for a storage unit in a.m. of Sunday at Bristol facility . After a 40 mile trip we found that the storage facility was closed for the day. Why did your agent not know about closure? All others we spoke to on phone after arriving in Bristol were able to see it was closed on their computers. We were told to call Johnson City facility where we were properly taken care of by Judy. Their were several customers in Bristol in same situation as us and many who were locked out of their units. Considering trailer rental was $340 and we went 40 miles out of our way not to mention we had our helpers drive to Bristol then to JC at my expense plus fuel this became a very expensive unload. We had to call JC to inquire about storage units available as all your agents told us we would have to wait until Monday the 23rd as they could not help us. This all cost me $200 dollars in paid labor and fuel. Had to be done Sunday as everyone had to work Monday. This was $200 I didn't have to spend if there were competent people representing your company making reservations and troubleshooting when there were problems not caused by customer.

That was super frustrating as the carts were taken from someone else that had finished when we were trying to unload one cart upstairs and the party had gotten there after us. I hope to not have to deal with that when moving out of the unit.

Jasmine C | First ImpressionsI did not like the situation with the lighting. Where as the building had Light in many areas the lights only came on by motion detection but did not stay on. This resulted in the lights going off out numerous times when working in my unit, resulting in leaving my unit several times to walk into the sensor area to get the lights to come back. This is an extreme negative. Another negative is not being able to access power outlet. Occasionally I needed to be able to use outlet for a few minutes. all of the electrical plug in units were extremely far apart and too high to reach which rendered Impossible to use for the average person. May I suggest that you put a timer on the electrical outlets to limit the time that people could use those and change your lighting situation that people did not have to continue to walk into the center to turn their lights back on. I’ve rented storage in many places and I have never had an issue with the lighting as I do at the U-Haul. And most all places have plug-ins within a distance that you could use a small extension cord to use it for a short period of time.

I wish the website would have let me know there weren’t the lower priced units available instead of allowing me to reserve one. I was not really able to say no to the higher price as I had a moving truck parked outside with all of my belongings in it. However the building is great and the man who helped me was very friendly, and took the time to show me where my unit was even though there were other customers in line.

I reserved a large unit on the first floor, only to be told that they did not have anymore of these. I was given two small units instead which suffice it are not what I originally RESERVED. I was also told through my receipt and reservation confirmation that I would not need to pay anything until 6/25 because of my reservation for a UHAUL truck on July 10th (move into the unit on 5/25). Upon arrival I was told to pay the full price for a month when I was told that booking a UHAUL truck would allow me to receive one month free of storage. The facility is nice and the staff was fine but I was extremely mislead and disappointed with the outcome and its difference from what I received information about in my confirmation of booking.

I had to leave my unit open unattended all night with unknown access by anyone who has 24 hour access . The 24 help number placed at the site is useless as no one answers it . And even customer service couldn't help they even said it says store at your own risk so that if we didn't camp out in front of the door we weren't getting in before 7 am even though thw posted accessible hours are 5 am thru 10 pm . Very poor customer service and even worse we might have lost our possessions and it was humorous to the people at customer service. I won't be back and I won't recommend this place or it's services to anyone ever .

When I arrived and informed them that I didn’t think my stuff would fit in the unit I had reserved, I was not offered a larger unit, but was instead required to pay for the 5x10 beside my unit. The tiny elevator will not stay open long enough to load more than one cart, and after pushing it open twice, it forces itself closed. This is a major safety hazard that I intend to report to the State of Tennessee. The back entrance door closest to our third unit would never unlock. I voiced my concerns to a male worker who did not respond or care. I filed a complaint with corporate who never followed up. We planned on long term storage, so we moved our stuff down the street to Storagemax. We are very frequent uhaul customers but this terrible experience has turned me away.

People are allowed to park directly in front of the front door so you have to maneuver around their cars while going down the curb. I dropped several items doings this and ruined an air compressor. The place was always warm and stuffy.

The only negative interaction was when we were just finishing moving out. We did not get a name, but the lady that was showing people around was rather abrupt and informed us we could not park where we were for loading- although it was marked as a loading zone. We had been there for 5 hours the day before and 3 hours the final day. No one had indicated that there was a problem with what we were doing. She also was not able to offer any other location that would be acceptable for loading a large trailer. Other than that one not so positive interaction, everyone else was great.
