I'll preface this by saying that the people who were working at this location on Sunday morning were great - extremely helpful, friendly, etc. However, the entire experience of getting my truck felt like a scavenger hunt. 1. The van wasn't where the app said it was, so we had to wander around until we found it. 2. The keys weren't where the app said they were, so we had to head back inside and wait for someone behind the counter to give them to us. 3. We purchased furniture pads which weren't in the van, so we had to go BACK inside and ask for the furniture pads. (Which, again, the people working there that morning grabbed them for us right away) 4. When we turned on the van we learned it had less than 1/8 of a tank of gas. Some of this is a UHAUL problem and not a location problem (if you're going to force people to check in and get their equipment with your app, you should, at the very least, give people the correct information). Overall, a frustrating experience, though the individuals working at this location during our pickup were in no way the problem.

PAMELA HOLMANThe young woman who helped me was great. However this location there’s never enough help, customers are left waiting, and the trucks aren’t always kept up. There is one truck gas was spilled into, a newer truck, and they still have not had the truck properly maintenance to remove the strong odor. They over charge various times and I have to call each time to get it fixed. The staff needs more help. The trucks need to be maintained better, half have censors that go off too. I’m not sure what the standard is but this is not it.

I rent from this location for my company about 10-12 times between November and March every year, and every year I keep going back because the team there makes the process so smooth and easy. I would highly recommend this location!
ELIZABETH REISSIGI wa supposed to pick up the truck at the Maplewood location and after waiting for over an hour since the wrong key was left in truck, I was sent to the Newark location, once i arrived in Newark, I was told they did not have the truck size i reserved. I was then sent to the Orange location where i finally got a truck, but at this time, I was four hours late because of the incompetency of the first location. I basically paid almost $500 and i got to my destination really late. This is totally unacceptable.

Fabian MorochoFacility was nice and clean. Stephanie was a great help. The only part of the time consuming pick up process that was efficient was her. She ping ponged at the register between me and a store full of angry customers. She gave clear direction and instruction better than the app. Answered mine and everyone elses questions. The only reason I'm not rating a full 5 stars is because of what it took to rent. No one likes this self-rental nonsense. Other than that the kind agent outside named Don helped me find and bring down my rental. It was clean and had a full tank. Personnel was awesome, logistics not so much.

I paid a upfront service cost of 223 for the unit and on 1-31-24 my experience was horrible. My storage unit was canceled and showed I move out. I needed to regain access to my unit. I was in the middle of a property showing hoping to be in and out of my unit. However that didn't happen I had to renew my contract and making multiple attempt to gain entry access ...I'm very unhappy, however I received excellent service from the gentleman who engaged with helping me to resolve the issue. Not sure if I would recommend uhaul to anyone.
ANTHONY CHARLES | First ImpressionsI understand to a point that it’s just a part of this new messed up world we’re living in, but I do not agree with everything being “self serve.” From start to finish, my rental process was done on my phone as per employee instructions. I went in, expecting to be able to rent a truck with a person, but was instead told I needed to make a reservation online, upload my drivers license and personal details online, elect whether or not I want additional insurance online, everything was to be done on my phone. The same was true when I went to return the truck. I had to take pictures with my phone and, yep you guessed it, upload them online. Why even have human employees at all then? May as well just be a facility with security cameras, signs, and QR codes. Just crazy to me. I’m not even sure how I’m supposed to rate the customer service as there really wasn’t any.
HECTOR RODRIGUEZThere is only one person working the registers and also by the equipment. I waited 20 minutes to drop off a trailer because both the customers and staff were slow, but once I talked to the staff, they were very kind and helpful. When picking up the trailer, it took Me nearly 40 minutes to not only wait to get assigned a unit because the lack of staff, it took another 10 minutes they didn’t have an extension cable for the trailer to hook up to my hitch harness.
Dominic PorcoroRental equipment I reserved was not available. One truck they said was due back 21 days ago and had no idea where it was. Then the alternative equipment they offered did not fit the furniture we were attempting to move so it was a complete waste of time.

DawnMarie SteinikOverall experience worked out great. However, the 5 x 10 unit was a bit too pricey for me. During my brief use, there was never any tissue or soap in the bathroom. Finally, although I observed regular cleaning, I did noticed an undesired critter at least once each visit. On the other hand, hand-carts were mostly always available and the elevators are huge enough to transport 2-3 customers if needed.
ROBERT JASEY | Overall ExperienceWhen I got in the cab of the truck at 8:30a, there was a fog of marijuana smell. And it lasted the whole day. I am glad that we were not pulled over, because then I would have been suspected of smoking it.

Kyshawn Pricher | Overall ExperienceI rent a lot of trucks and trailers from U-Haul, in many different locations. This is the only one that requires customers to process the rental via their cell phone during regular business hours . All other locations handle it at the counter In addition, I have never rented a truck at this location with more than 1/4 tank of gas.
THOMAS HOLLERBACHI picked my u-haul truck up with no gas in it, returned it with gas and I was still charged a fuel fee. This is very poor service, when I found out that I was supposed to receive a fuel credit be it that I received the truck with suck low gas. This location needs to work on customer service.

HUGO MOROCHO MOROCHOI rented a '15 truck yesterday. I was put off by how I had to fill everything out on my phone. while the person behind the counter helped me on how to answer. It just was weird and made me frustrated, that I had to do all the work. So, if I am frustrated, others are too. I get it, it makes some sense for U-haul to do it this way, have to take a photo of my ID and me. But, I imagine it leads to no longer providing counter help either. As for the truck, it was old and mostly clean. But, the transmission was so loose, it was hard to find "D." And it changed gears so crazily late I thought the thing would overheat. Even when I took off the tow function. When I returned the truck, I was not met by anyone for a few minutes. And when I was, it was from the front seat of another truck. She yelled to just drop the key in the black door.

But the online self-check out and self return process on your phone DOES NOT WORK. very annoying process/app. i tried it twice when i picked up, and twice again when i returned the truck. it never worked at all, making me very annoyed and wasting my time. luckily the staff at the location were very helpful and they did the check out and return process for me on their tablet/device. - also, the website uhaul/com does NOT WORK either. i tried many times before my pick up to "sign into my account", -tried that a few times both ways (password or text code) and it never worked at all, - it keeps you stuck at the sign in screen. also very annoying and wasting a lot of my time. you really need to fix your terrible software , website sign in and app. by the way, i did rentals in 2021 and 2022 and i did Not have these problems then.

It served its purpose, and I think the customers renting them should take better care of them.

The lock for my storage would be inside and they did not take me upstairs and show me where my storage .They weren’t very thorough with explaining everything. There was a lot of men standing around in the parking lot. Rushing you asking if you wanted help that didn’t work for the facility very uncomfortable feeling.

The facility in Orange was understaffed and the staff that was there spoke or understood little to no English. There was 1 young lady that eventually helped me and she should be gettinga raise. No men were there to help me at all!!! I had to take apart my own tow dolly. I had no idea what I was doing. I was on YouTube trying to find answers and the young lady was told she couldn't do it for me. I was literally on the ground underneath my suv trying to unhook chains. I am a 54 year old woman that should not have been the case. I was charged by the PA facility to put it on and you guys have the audacity to be trying to charge me more money ... for what? I put the gas on the truck and I did not go over the 166 miles I was promised. I actually was under 160 miles. It literally took me 2 hours before I even got my pass key to get in the storage untit. I was at your facility for 5 hours. I left your equipment and truck there in good condition an entire day early ... my experience as a valued customer was the worse ever ... I'm very disappointed and I don't owe you guys 1 more dime with the exception of my monthly storage payment. So please do not attempt to charge my card again. Have a blessed day

They went above and beyond as it was a very busy weekend.

It appears to me the a few of the attendants cared more about their personal conversation via mobile phone vs the business phone. I had to drive to the location to resolve a 3 minute issue because i spent more than an hour attempting to resolve my issues via telephone. They wound not answer the phone. I truly believe that location could be have increased revenues if you clean house and hire individuals that want to work and not act like they are doing the customer a favor by doing their jobs they were hired to do. There were at least two wonderful people that truly understood what good customer service is.

He then walked away from the computer without saying anything to me and left. Male employee (2) who was now at the other end of the counter said he was helping me and that is how I knew I had to go over to him and start all over again. Then when the young lady came in he told her what happened and told her to help me check in. If it wasn't for the fact that I had just moved 4 large vanities there and my time with the haul truck rental was almost up I would have went to another facility. It took me so long to get checked in that I was late for my 5pm appointment.

Starting from the beginning with the online selection process up to the day I arrived to collect the lock and key to the unit, the staff was pleasant, and courteous. I appreciate the patience of all the initial staff member that helped me with my selection of a unit. She gave clear instructions on what to do the day I woul move in. I am grateful to the gentleman who came from beyond the cpunter to show me how to get to my storage unit and further talked me through the process of how to access the building. Lastly I am grateful to the gentleman who assisted in getting the tractor trailor driver to move his truck so i could park my car so I could access my the storage unit for the last time. And the young lady that helped me unlock my unit. (I didn't lock it properly and they notified ne of it via email). for helping me finalize the paperwork to close my unit without hasseling me. Thank you staff for being so courtes and helpful.

During the few months at this facility I exchanged numbers with four other customers who have their bike stored there as well. One day the manager approched me and told me to remove the motorcycle from the facility, no bikes are allowed. That put me in a tight spot. If I was told from the begining that no motorcycles were allowed I would have chose another location. The manager has 4 other bikes at this location being stored that I know of. This shows me his poor management skills and he is responsible for leaving customers greatly inconvienced. I will never use U- HAUL or ever refer U-HAUL to anyone as long as I live, especially that mis managed location.

However, billing was oftentimes erratic and inconsistent, resulting in over-charges that required personally contacting UHaul to try to fix. For example, most recently, after announcing a rate increase for a unit (3502), charges for the new amount started BEFORE the increase was supposed to take place. Sometimes charges went in twice. Unfortunately, online reviews suggest that this was an experience shared by other customers.

Thomas White | Overall ExperienceThis is a review of Uhaul, and not specifically this location. I booked a storage unit with one location. I had a reservation and a set price at 89.99 plus tax and insurance. When I arrived (225 Long Ave), a sign on the door said that it was closed and to call a number. I called and they told me to go to another location (1000 Sherman). I did. When I got there, after waiting a while, the person told me that the location wasn't open at all and I could get a smaller unit with them for a lot more money ($125). I left and called Uhaul. The person on the phone was confused that the location was closed. She said it didn't make sense. Finally, she figured out that it was a new location and it wasn't yet open for business. For some reason, I was still able to make a reservation for it though for a date when it wasn't open. I ended up paying a lot more for a unit at a different place. So, it was a disaster. I really would expect to get the benefits of having a large chain, namely, that they would honor the price for when I booked. It seems like it's more a series of independent places that kind of work together, not at all as good. The person on the phone was helpful, and the place it's at is fine, but this was a mess so beware of this kind of thing with Uhaul.

The process was not clear on how to check in at the front door so that led to serious frustration while moving in. A text said I will have a lock ready in my unit and there was none there so I had to run around the facility to find an employee to fetch a lock (which was originally included in my rent). The only thing that made this facility worth it was the large elevator, and the 1 month free with a truck rental. Other than that I would not advise.

The staff understood my point and put the account back in the system since I would lose my money . I would not recommend U-Haul to anyone because this is not the first incident I have had. The Management team is rude and unprofessional from my pass incident when I had to call a locksmith and they locked my unit. The worst place to do business. This pandemic nobody has Money to just give away. Please train your staff to let the customer know up front all details before just trying to rush the customer off. U-Haul does not credit for days remaining on the account if that’s the policy let the customer know their opinions. Which is good customer service. This location is the worst

April Tracey | Online Move InWhen i initially reserved a truck i specifically stated i needed a truck that i could drop at another location as opposed to returning it to where id pick it up. I was moving out of state so that made the most sense. I confirmed with the agent that i could drop the trick at another location in nj...perfect. Three days prior to my pick up date i received a call from uhaul confirming the reservation; however; i had to return the truck to ny! And instead of my flat rate id now be charged per mile!!! I explained to the agent that this was not was reserved and he said sorry cant help thats all we have blah blah. So instead of a rate of i think it was $139? I ended up with a $222 bill.,,almost $100 more!!! Completely unacceptable and the agent was not willing to work with me at all. When i returned the truck to the original location the agent there informed me if i got a bigger truck it would have been one way only...a15” as opposed to a 10”....this was never offered to me as an option when i was told ‘there’s no availability to drop off the truck at another location’....complete scam! Truly thought uhaul had a better reputation...lesson learnt....never again!

Upon arrival to the facility around 11pm, after a 4 hour drive from Maryland, we tried the access code, which failed with an error message "not checked in". We called Jonathan, who understandably didn't pick up at such hours, as well as the 1800 #. We spoke to two people- the personnel from corporate apologized for the misinformation and poor communication by the staff member at this location however she was unable to provide us access into the storage facility and she mentioned we were not authorized after hours access. This was puzzling as we were specifically told we would have after hours access BY THE PERSON WHO CALLED ME at 5:15pm. I did not seek this information, it was voluntarily handed to me. So instead of loading everything from the uhaul truck rental, to the storage unit, we had to drive to our parents home, in queens, NY, adding more miles to the truck rental, increasing cost of travel, and extending the amount of time this move was supposed to take, which is all unacceptable by such a reputable company during such difficult times. We will return tomorrow in order to move in on June 12, 2020. This doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of our experience thus far.
