The online experience was subpar, but the people I spoke to in person were both excellent.
Russell MOvercharged for fuel. Rented the truck and drove a total of 12 miles as documented on the receipt. I put 1.5 gallons of gas in the truck. After I dropped it off they charged me $9.50 for 2 more gallons of gas. Really?? 3 & 1/2 gallons for 12 miles??? A RIPOFF!!!

It had a leaky right front tire that I had to drive around and find a sttion with an air pump, the windshield washer reservoir was empty, and the truck needs an oil change. Was the truck clean? Yes. Ws it serviced well? NO.

LOREN DBooked my truck and trailer a month in advance with an online reservation, went to pick up the truck and trailer and only had the truck. Had to drive 20 mins to another location and another 30 mins home. It’s disappointing when you spend this amount of money and have a reservation a month in advance and they still can’t get it right. Also disappointing that uhual doesn’t give a military discount. Overall give the experience 4 out of 10 because of the trailer situation.
Martin KI was not told that you would not be reimbursed for gas if you bring the truck back with more than you started with. My travel duration was much less than expected to be and brought the truck back with much more gas than I left the location with, leaving me out $80.
Ryan MI didn’t have any equipment but I was charged $1.00 . I also had to bring the truck back to the location cause a lock was on it . I couldn’t load my stiff on the truck until I brought the truck back to Elmwood to take the lick off then return to the storage to load my stuff . The miles on the truck was not rightwhen I first got the truck.

john sBest Uhaul location I have visited in a long time! The counter staff were young, but more respectful and more helpful and friendly than many other places I have encountered. I spoke to three different people there, and they were all great to deal with and very helpful. I told one of them that they run a tight ship. Good experience, would recommend.
Josiah BThe paperwork said the facility was open same hours on Sunday, but b it was not. The office closed earlier and so did access. The woman on the toll free number was snippy and smart-aleck. We arrived 20 minutes after closing with a truck and trailer fully loaded. Not happy campers. However, once we learned to go by office hours and not the paperwork , all was well. I would like to mention that I stopped at the UHaul location on Forest Drive and picked up 2 packages of crystal/glassware boxes, got them across town to where I was packing b up, only to discover the packages only had dividers, NO BOXES. That was a bit irritating, not to mention making me feel ripped off. You might want to check on that. The labels clearly listed the BOX as INCLUDED.

So I rented truck for 24 hours, used it for 10, they checked it in 2 hours before the end of my rental, still charged me $20. Seems like a slimy way to get a few more dollars.

The process was painless and quick and I was on my way with a box truck rental for a pretty fair price. I will definitely use this location again if necessary in my future and will recommend it to anyone needing that type of services as well!!!

Alice JGet more parking spot for customers, there's a huge parking lot right next to that hardly seems to get customers. It's also a risk for U-Haul customers as we park there assuming it's U-Haul's and risk getting our cars towed. The place is also severely understaffed. And they can't even see the exact items you ordered online, like boxes.
MANUEL SGet better trucks. There was no heat. It was raining and cold. The truck does not shift gears properly. It’s a hazardous on the road. I was also charged for something that wasn’t as serious as the maintenance of the truck for being on the road.

Sandrica HThe bolts holding the latch on the door is missing a nut on one of the bolts, so it's only secured by one bolt. Before I got to the location I did some research online decided to go ahead and reserve my unit on the U-Haul app. During checkout I applied my reservation or order number from my truck rental. That said I qualified for one month free. It then discounted the price to where I would only pay for the insurance which was say $8. I get to the location and they would not honor the one month free even though the website had already validated my truck rental qualifying me for one month free. My first payment should have been 12 5 but they falsely advertised the one month storage for free because that is not what happened when I showed up to the location. If the location wouldn't allow that, you should not be able to punch it in on the app and it give you a price that they will not honor whenever you get to the location

I ended up extending the equipment rental and drive back to hotel with the trailer behind me, accomplished nothing. İt cost me one da and all the related expenses for the extra day. Storage unit door had some nuts missing so bolts didn't stay intact.
Mutlu T | Overall ExperienceI came down to unload a 6X12 trailer and your staff gave me 5X5 storage, telling me that 5X5 is the only size of free unit I am eligible for my current equipment rental. Turned out that free storage space is calculated according to the size of rented equipment. İt cost me one more day and one more day of all the related expenses. They need training.
Mutlu T | First ImpressionsI felt unsafe in the cargo van I rented. Traveling from Columbia to Charleston, the steering felt “off,” and the vehicle felt too light. I’ve rented these before, and usually have a great experience. They are easier for a female to handle alone. It was probably my particular van, or maybe the van and distance. It may be valuable to ask the client what they are doing and what vehicle is most travel appropriate for their project. Still fast and easy and good customer service, just a shaky van!
Emily HBetter communication is needed. Pick up truck has a minimum of 50 miles. Over estimate your miles. You have to pay double if you go over. You must have a phone so you can take a selfie and you must allow them to access your photos on your phone.
cindy sI want to help, so here goes: I left the first U-Haul location I visited because in Irmo because I thought the woman running the place “lacked customer service skills,” the second place in West Columbia because they were too anxious to leave at 4:30 p.m., and ended up leasing a U-Haul vehicle at 400 Orchard Road in West Columbia. Hannah was very personable and professional, a breath of fresh air. Then, mysteriously, without explanatiion, I began receiving emails from the U-Haul Dealership on Elmwood Drive in Columbia. After numerous attempts, using your app to reach a human being, I finally found the business card for the owner of the 400 Orchard Road dealership and called the manager’s cell phone number. He was very helpful, and solved the mystery. The cargo van at his dealership had mechanical issues, so I had to pick up another van at the Elmwood location. I could say more, bit I believe this is enough.

Emma PI originally had requested a delivery new-style, but learned at the check-in that the length of time I requested combined with going "under 100 miles" means I didn't qualify for a van, or something to that effect? I was given a box truck-styke instead. I am just confused why I was able to request a van if my moving information in the rest of the request meant I couldn't get a van. My rate was the same, but I did end up paying more for insurance, so it did end up costing me in the end jumping from around $38 to $55.

Jerilyn jStaff were friendly. The light in my unit went out but I didn't report it. My biggest disappointment is not fully understanding the storage unit close out process. I asked on site staff what I needed to do to close out the storage unit as I returned the card key. I was told that's all I had to do. A month later I saw I had been charged to the month after I moved out. UHAUL would provide better customer service by reminding movers to close out online. UHAUL lays out lots of legal information to cover the companies interests. Why not be clearer about mover's close out process.
Pamela M | Overall ExperienceA+ Experience, We've had this storage unit for 10 years. Overall it has been a great experience. Staff was always on site and professional. I was able to get the things I needed out of storage early in the morning or late in the evening which was very convenient for me. This particular storage unit did not have AC but kept all of our belongings fresh and clean especially our clothes. Yes alot of our clothes was boxed up in this storage unit since June 2013 and when we purchased our brand new home July 2023 We took those clothes out of boxes and they still looked and smelled good. We washed them and took them to the cleaners before taking the majority to goodwill to bless some people. The General Manager Mr. Sylvester Gadson he was always there or either one call away to assist with questions or concerns. We appreciate his professional managerial skills along with the mangers that came before him. Whether its short term or long term I highly recommend you choose this storage facility. For your storage needs.

John GThis Elmwood Avenue U-haul facility is as good as it gets. It’s super clean and the staff members are friendly and very helpful. Had easy access in and out of our storage room. It’s well lit and we felt safe coming and going from the facility throughout the day and early evening hours.
Greg R | Overall ExperienceThe price shown while booking it online and picking it up from the site is always different. I had this issue with my previous booking and I got the extra amount refunded. But why isn’t there not a transparency. $51 is not a lot. But when I booked it said $39 including insurance and the dolley. I was also told in the contract that there’s 3/8s of the tank of gas. But when I pulled out of the parking lot it only had a 1/4. Like I literally drove less than ten miles but had to fill up before I had to drop it back. I’m not trying to get refund or anything this time. All I am saying is there should be more transparency on U-hauls part and the guys at the location needs to be a little bit more honest and professional.

Joseph N | Overall ExperienceWe had this storage for over 13 years when my wife and I combined houses. Our kids are grown and out of the house and took their personal belongings so we no longer need the storage unit. We enjoyed our time there. It was convenient to our home. The only issue that we had was that the overhead lights were constantly burned out as all units are on a single automated switch. We kept a portable battery powered LED light in our unit to alleviate the issue but should U-Haul ever make modifications to the facility, I would recommend florescent tubes lights which last longer and/or equip each unit with it's own light switch. All in all, we appreciate the service that U-Haul provided to us over the years.

The restroom is the WORST ever. There is not a big dumpster to dispose of things properly (you have to take them offsite), which is a huge inconvenience that was not specified before. Lastly staff is usually not around when you need help after 4pm on any given day.

Jerome M | Overall ExperienceThis is no reflection on the facility manager, Mr. GADSON. He did listen to our concerns. We had the largest unit in the facility and there was no lighting in the unit. We shared our concerns and he made his supervisor aware. Sad to say this has been a long ongoing standing problem at this facility. We had to bring our own lighting while there. In fact we complained to upper level management and left our contact information with no success of a return phone call. In this, we felt ignored. It stands to be said that an unit of this magnitude should have sufficient lighting. Upon our departure, Mr. GADSON tried to seek attempts for some source of lighting. We brought an industrial light and a long industrial extension cord, however there was no outlets in the area. Here we go again, for our final time, we had to bring multiple battery powered lighting. I challenge you to see this Unit D173 for yourselves. We believe this is the case for majority of the units at the Elmwood storage facility located on Elmwood Street. The facility is dated, at the same time, updates and improvements should have been made. Next time we’ll ask to inspect the unit first.

I should have been refunded the additional amount for the climate controlled unit since it never was air conditioned. Sonia C | First ImpressionsAfter almost four years at that facility I was run off for ALTERED entry and exit procedures. Sylvester Gadson started his campaign of harassment after I reported him to Kimberly Rubino for telling me that wearing a tank top on a 92 degree day at a storage facility was inappropriate. He also threatened Nicole, another staff member, for not making me follow his RIDICULOUS entry and exit procedures. On top of that he constantly spoke to me in a derogatory way every time we interacted all the way up until I left. His final act of TYRANNY was putting an eviction notice on my unit and adding a second lock denying my access. After it was understood that I had to go he wouldn't remove the extra lock from my unit to allow me to put my things in such an order that would allow a prompt exit until the day I had to move. I've had brain surgery which left me with epilepsy. I also have high blood pressure and asthma. HE KNOWS THIS. I also take medications for depression and anxiety. I am homeless because of my condition, he also knows this, yet he kept up the HARRASSMENT until he could find a way to evict me. I explained all of this to his manager Kevin Anderson and his response was that he stands by Sylvester's decision no matter how long I've been a tenant. So now I'm going to take my own action with the Better Business Bureau.
Stacey D | Overall ExperienceItems in the unit had mold, and a few things had to be thrown away, thought by paying for a climate controlled unit it would have prevented this issue. It was a bit warm and humid with temps above 80 on the thermostat. There was also a smell of moth balls present on the linens and mattress. I would recommend storage only for a short term solution.

Then found out that elevator was also out of service for over a week and I would have to use the stairs to move all of my items out! Ecclesia K | First Impressions1) We had a lot of trouble checking in. Were told that there wasn't a unit available for us. LONG process. Eventually we got one, so all was well. The people on the phone definitely were not in sync with the people on site. There should be better communication so that customers are not misled. 2) Unit had a rat trap in it. YUCK! Maybe in the halls, but in the unit itself - right next to the mattresses etc. YUCK. Disgusting. Maybe that is standard practice - I don't know - but it was definitely not appealing. 3) We arrived (after a 10 hour drive) to get stuff out of our storage unit. We arrived at 8 pm, as the website said the access hours were until 10 pm. When we got there, it was locked. The attendant said the access closed at 8, despite the fact that there were signs posted ALL OVER the place (front door, gate, elevators, website, etc.) that said the hours were until 10. I think the guy just didn't want to stay that night. VERY VERY Frustrating as we had a very short window in which to do our work. Extremely inconvenient. It's fine if the hours are 8, but just post that onsite and online so people can plan accordingly. Very frustrating to arrive and not be able to get in. 4) Unit was supposed to be climate controlled, but it was definitely hotter inside than outside -- in South Carolina in the summer! Frustrating to pay more for a climate control unit and then have it be so hot inside.

However, when I drove to my new rental unit, there were two (2) old/dirty campers and two old cars immediately in front of the unit. Also, just a security note: The side gate that is located near Building D, was left open and did not close the whole time I was in the office setting up my rental and/or when I was in and out of my unit. Other than those two (2) things, everything else is satisfactory. The Staff has always been very courteous and helpful every time I have visited for boxes, tape, and now the rental.

There were rat feces on top of several of my boxes and storage containers. The in-door, supposed climate controlled unit was hot and not temperature controlled. Items I stored have heat damage-some beyond repair. The cost of the storage units I rented vs the actual service I received is ridiculous. Not only would I never recommend anyone use UHaul storage, I will caution anyone and everyone against it, unless they are prepared to throw away all of their stored items. Additionally, every time I have rented a truck from UHaul, it has been filthy. The most recent rental experience was especially horrible. My reservation was made through the customer service number. The representative assigned me to pick up from a “Stop & Shop” because I wanted to pick up the truck at 7AM. This is not a UHaul location, so, I was unable to scan and check out the vehicle. The owner of this location was rude and not at all helpful. While the location was supposed to open at 8/8:30AM he did not arrive until almost 9:30AM. I was clear that he did not want to do business with women and proceed to only respond to request when my father spoke. However, based on my other horrible UHaul experiences, I’m not at all surprised that this entity was selected as a UHaul dealer. I look forward to never having to use UHaul again.

RAFAEL o | Overall ExperienceOn May 22 I drove 3.5 hours from out of state and had a previously secured reservation for a 7.5 x 10 climate controlled storage unit at the Elmwood Avenue U-Haul storage facility. The initial unit I was provided was occupied. After another second floor unit was finally identified I found out the elevator was broken. It appeared that this was related to the fire alert feature of the elevator which continually beeped, had a flashing red light and kept the elevator on the first floor. I mentioned this to the office staff who told me this happens all the time (sounds like a safety/fire code issue to me). I was told my options were to carry my stuff upstairs or pay more money for the same size unit on the first floor. I requested they honor the pricing on my reservation due to this inconvenience and was told it was not their fault their elevator was not working and they refused (I never heard of a business not taking responsibility for not having basic functioning equipment that is integral to the service they provide). Due to the inconvenience I requested that they escalate this to the manager who was not on site at the time. She was called but refused to honor my pricing. While at the Elmwood Avenue location I attempted to call U-Haul customer service but didn’t get through to a representative due to unacceptable hold times in excess of 30 minutes. This whole situation seemed like a classic bait and switch scenario and I decided to take my business elsewhere to a storage facility that actually cared about their customers. I spent in excess of 2.5 hours trying to work this out at the Elmwood Avenue U-Haul location which also included calling, securing and driving to a competing facility. This was a very bad experience which suggested that U-Haul does not care about my time or my business. This is particularly disappointing since I have 4 U-Haul equipment rentals between May and August. Based on this negative experience I would never use the Elmwood Avenue storage facility and would highly discourage anyone else from doing so.

LaConey (“LaConey”), a customer of UHaul Self-Storage (“UHaul”), situated at 1037 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, South Carolina 29201, seeking remedial and compensatory relief, based upon a pattern of harassment perpetrated by a Jacqueline Matthews (“Matthews”) against LaConey; and denial of authorized access to LaConey’s self-storage unit; and failure of Matthews to provide a climate-controlled environment for LaConey’s unit, while acting under, and by exceeding her authority as General Manager of UHaul. The facts in support of the within complaint are as follows: BACKGROUND: LaConey has been leasing self-storage Unit #E236 from UHaul since early 2019. UHaul represents that it is a “Climate Controlled” facility. The access hours are posted conspicuously. In late 2019, Matthews was assigned as the Manager of UHaul. Immediately after assuming her assignment as Manager, Matthews began a campaign of harassment against LaConey and certain other UHaul customers as follows: 1. Matthews has persistently locked the courtesy restrooms, then denied LaConey the key to the restrooms, on the pretext that “the lock is not working”. Customers have urinated in the stairwells and other areas of the facility, presumably for the same reason, as evidenced by the numerous threatening notes posted by Matthews, which LaConey has obtained. 2. Matthews, and other UHaul personnel, have persistently, and discriminately locked the doors to the inside units up to one (1) hour before the prescribed time, without notice, thereby denying inside customers access to their units, to the exclusion of customers leasing outside units. Matthews intimidates inside customers by hovering nearby with her arms folded, and demanding that all customers exit the building immediately, under threat of eviction. Matthews has been observed yelling to customers with inside units, “I’m tired! I’m ready to go home! I’ll lock up whenever the [expletive] I want to! I don’t give a [expletive]!” Effectively, customers with outside units enjoy unfettered access, once they pass through the security gate, to the prejudice of customers with inside units. Such arbitrary, discriminate and abusive practices perpetrated for the mere convenience of UHaul staff, are inconsistent with necessary safety and security measures outlined in the lease agreement; yet, they are consistent with the pattern of harassment complained of. 3. As stated above, UHaul represents that it is a “Climate Controlled” facility; however, the temperature inside Building E, where LaConey’s unit is situated, persistently exceeds 100 degrees F. Matthews utterly refuses to take corrective action, which, again, is consistent with the pattern of harassment complained of. 4. Most recently, Matthews has discriminately selected customers, who enter through the security gate on foot, to sign a logbook, to the exclusion of customers who drive through the gate, and/or who lease outside units, which, again, is consistent with the pattern of harassment complained of. LaConey’s claim is supported by video surveillance. ARGUMENTS: LaConey contends that Matthews has exceeded the bounds of her authority as General Manager of UHaul in furtherance of a personal agenda against LaConey. LaConey further contends that the discriminatory, prejudicial and abusive practices of Matthews, constitutes harassment, are violative of the lease agreement, and may violate the Civil Rights Act. Thus, because Matthews acted in her personal capacity to further a personal agenda, LaConey enjoys the prerogative to sue Matthews individually, and in her personal capacity, in lieu of suit in arbitration. CONCLUSION: Should this matter not be resolved to the satisfaction of LaConey, LaConey shall seek punitive damages in addition to the relief sought. Any evidence developed, during suit(s) against Matthews, shall be used against UHaul Corporation in arbitration. Matthews shall have twenty (20) days to respond to this demand before the matter proceeds to the magistrate’s court. RELIEF SOUGHT: 1. Remuneration of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) for the improper denial of storage access and for denial of a climate-controlled environment. 2. That Matthews post the permanently restricted access hours in a conspicuous location within five (5) business days of receipt of this transmittal; and to timely post notice of any further access restrictions, accordingly. 3. That Matthews cease and desist any, and all forms of harassment against, and abuse of UHaul customers. 4.
