If there's no equipment available (u boxes, trucks, etc.) then I shouldn't be able to order online and go thru the whole process only to be told on the actual scheduled day that Uhaul doesn't have any of what I requested available...there's has to be a better system than whats currently in placeKEITHDERRELL A.
Right when we got to the counter they were ready to give up on us. They overbooked the storage spaces and we ended up with a space that we didn't even reserve, which wasn't an upgrade, for the same exact price as our original reservation. The guy we interacted seemed done with life (which is fair in customer service), but he didn't try at all to find a solution with us, which I felt was beyond ridiculous. Once he couldn't find my phone number (Due to him not asking if it was storage or truck) it was obvious he couldn't care less. I understand being rude to rude customers, but the man we dealt with was rude from the get go. It took a nice, kind woman in the background to shout to him for him to realize that they still had open storage. Once the woman took charge everything was smooth, but without her the process would've been difficult and beyond annoying. The only reason I'm giving this department 2 stars is because of that woman, she treated us like people and was beyond kind hearted. The UHaul employee who helped me was so great. Her name was Dani (I'm not sure how to spell). This UHaul location is always very business, but she was efficient, courteous and displayed excellent customer service. I can't say enough about this employee and appreciate her time and effort to making sure that I was able to get a truck and a storage unit for my reservation. There was also a gentleman outside who was inventorying trucks and he was helpful too and very nice. I was having problems starting the truck and he came right over and got me situated. Kid behind the counter (not Tyreke, the other one not wearing a nametag) looked and acted as though he hadn't gotten sleep in three days. I'm slightly hard of hearing but not deaf but HOLY HELL he didn't speak above a whisper and mumbled the whole time. The location is in a miserable area of the city, my roll down door on the 15' truck I rented had a locked chained to it but the lock itself was cut, if that's any indication. When I arrived to grab my U-Haul via mobile order, we got in the truck and two other men arrived and informed us that they had booked the same truck. After waiting on hold with customer service for 20 minutes, they gave us the okay to leave and they likely had to wait much longer for another truck. Inside my truck, there was no dolly or blankets even though I had paid for them. The truck was clean and maintained, and the location staff who were leaving as I pulled up were still incredibly kind to make sure I knew how to pick up my mobile order. Still, I wish I were more able to reach customer service, and I wish the pick-up process were more streamlined to insure that vehicles can't be double-booked. There appeared to be more of the same size on the lot when I arrived and when I returned my truck 2.5 hours later.Jackson C.

Received a key, walked the five minutes around the property to the back of the building to find out the truck was in the back, not the front. Walked around the building again, waited in line again, got a new truck. Went around to the back AGAIN to find ANOTHER truck in front of the new truck. WALKED AROUND THE BUILDING AGAIN, NOW THIS IS 20 MINUTES OF WALKING SO FAR. Went inside, waited in line for 10 minutes. Told them the issues, was told someone was "hoarding keys". I asked them to find the employee, all three personnel refused to respond to me. I had to raise my voice and demand assistance. I stood there for 15 minutes when the "key hoarder" walked in and he HAD NO KEYS!!!!! I got there at 12:00 it is now 12:45, after the supposed "key hoarder" said he had no keys one of the employees actually looked at the keys on the board and saw the keys that were for the truck in the front. Had he made any effort at all to address me, apologize, take any responsibility I would not be writing this. But he sat there slouching in his seat, typing with one hand and a lazy demeanor. Everyone had to ask him to speak up and repeat himself a number of times. There was NO customer service, no positive attitudes, no effort, nothing one would expect from a customer service role. While this is a high volume location due to the college I would rather buy a truck than have to deal with your unprofessional, lazy, unsupportive, unpleasant staff at that location. I've rented U-hauls over 50 times in my life and I can say hands down this was the worst staff EVER. Please get someone down there to fix this!!!!Scott S.

To start, I called this location twice to try and get info and set up for the rental. Both times I was placed on hold for over 10 minutes before the lines were just disconnected! So I call Mechanicsville u-haul to see if they can make me a reservation there and the agent actually don't me that they don't bother answering there but brought your website up so I didn't have to deal with them much. I make me reservation, go in, dude checking me in is slouches over and keeps putting his finger up at me as a means to say hold on which is rude! He gets a contract down and and me a lease and goes for the keysâ€¦ only to come back and tell me don't use the link y'all send me to inspect the vehicle because they have to give me a different truck- he doesn't know how to give me another link.. he calls another guy over when I expressed my concern over there being no accountability for the truck and no trail. He calls another guy over who also does not know how to send a link but takes me to the truck and we walk around it. They can't figure out a new link but don't worry, he sees and got everything. I actually go to drive the truck and the breaks are scraping and I'm skidding trying to stop-â€˜I was scared to death I was doing to hit someone they were so bad and I was not speeding or breaking harshly. Later, it starts to rain, the trucks windshield wipers are scraping and then one just flies off while I'm on the interstate!! Get back to my new apartment and the truck starts going â€˜hun-hun-hun and stalling making the truck jerk back and forth. It took me a day trying to drive your truck to get my move done. Your associates at Lombardy do not answer the phone and are rude and do not disclose issues nor correct mistakes. I arrived 10 minutes before my scheduled time of 10:00am -- I had completed all components on line to speed up check in. I didn't receive my vehicle until 10:23 because there was a huge line of people and only one person checking in. I had a 4 hour rental -- so by the time my contract was given to me it said I need to have the van back by 2:00 which was only 3 1/2 hours -- and I was still charged the same amount of money even though I was short changed 30 minutes. The employee was going to make me walk down the hill and across a fairly busy road to get the van -- and I have issues walking. I looked at him as if to say Really??? and then he ran a got the van while all the people behind me had to wait. Terrible that the employee had no help and even worse that customers were waiting 30 minutes to be served!! I should at least be reimbursed for the 30 minutes time I was short changed on the vehicle -- and even more for having to stand and wait 30 minutes when I had done all the work on line!! The GM charged me again when I went to pick up the keys so I paid $90 for a cargo van rental that I only drove 30 miles. Unfortunately again there was an issue with the equipment not being available as indicated by the reservation. This is 3 for 3 this summer where the equipment was properly reserved, I showed up, and the equipment wasn't available. This time the U-Haul representative tried to say it was my fault because I showed up for the 1:30 pickup at 1:40. I then had to wait for another truck to be returned by a delinquent customer. U-Haul charged the delinquent customer a late fee equal to a whole additional day but didn't compensate me for my lost time. Very poor cellular service with no wifi options on-site made the contactless checkout a very time-consuming process. I reserved two dolly's, a furniture and utility dolly for the few hours I had the truck. Neither was included in my rental. When I came back to the facility to retrieve those dollies I was told none were on the premises. They managed to find one furniture dolly for me to use and two different representatives said they would address the charges for the dolly I did not receive. Ultimately I was charged for two dollies and the charges made to my account were not taken care of as assured. I even disputed the charges at check out and no one contacted me before billing. Contacting customer service for an appropriate refund has been a difficult and lengthy process. In the future, I will go anywhere but Uhaul and will be sure to tell my friends the same.Anastasia C.

I was not pleased with the overall experience of my unit. My property was stored in the climate control part of the storage section. Upon moving out I notice several items of my property where damage. My new white leather seats had specs of blue/black spots on them (pretty sure it was mold). My new black leather sectional was chipping around the edges of the couch. There was chips of the ceiling all over all of my property that went through the netted fence above my unit. I would like to be refunded for the tow dolly. The condition that I received it in was unacceptable. The person who attached my car to the dolly did not do it correctly. I had to delay my trip by a day due to the poor handling from the staff in not knowing how to properly put together the equipment. The tires also had to be changed after the roadside assistance arrived and evaluated the situation. I scheduled and arranged to rent a 8x10 split level lower unit for $89.85/ month weeks before our move in date. I also called the the facility directly to ensure everything was in order, and was told it was. When we arrived they told us there was no unit available for the size or cost we scheduled! They said they only had a larger unit for $50 more per month!! I told them that was unacceptable because it was their error. The extremely rude manager told us there was nothing she could do and if we didn’t want it we could leave!! We had no choice but to take the unit because we traveled 2 hours to get there and had another 10 hours of travel ahead of us. This manager did not “manager “ anything! Her name was Nu Nu! Useless, rude, and disrespectful! I felt like your customer service people on the phone when you scheduled a unit were all sweet and well spoken, and promised things that obviously they have no idea if the reality of the actual facilities they are representing! Total disconnect! I have every intention of reaching out to corporate to get this resolved. I would have given it better ratio if the guy acted like he cared a little. The woman was friendly but the male was not. The storage unit is very old which turned me off. But clear of debris. And the access hours were unclear I think they wanted me up grade or something for earlier access. It didn’t matter anyway because I got a unit closer to my family. There seems to be a disconnect between what the local facility does and what corporate does. Every time a local manager approves something, the corporate office can't seem to get the record straight. This causes me a ton of wasted time which equates to a BAD experience. So is the local facility good? Yes. Is UHaul overall good? NO. Good facility for storage, but the staff are incredibly unprofessional. We are trying to isolate due to COVID and were promised that someone would help us check in from the parking lot. Instead we were met with staff members who were obviously high and didn't pay attention to our request at all. Tried explaining over the phone that we had an immunocompromised family member in the car who couldn't be exposed, but the person we spoke to was barely listening and didn't care at all. When we tried to flag down someone in the parking lot, they kept sticking their head in our car without a mask and were also obviously high. Because no one would listen, we had to go inside where staff were unfriendly and half weren't wearing masks. To top it all off, while we were unloading our truck, staff members were blatantly smoking weed in the parking lot. The communication about when we could access our unit was extremely unclear, and we received contradictory information from the website, emails, and on the phone with different agents. We arrived at 9pm after a long day of moving believing we could access our unit until 10pm. We found out we could only access it until 7pm (even though our reservation stated access hours were until 10pm). We were told to come back the next morning at 9am. When we arrived at 9am the next morning, the manager was late and so we still couldn't access our unit until 9:20 am. We had returned a vehicle transport the first night we arrived, checked it in and notified staff, but then 5 days later we got a call asking where it was. It was all around inefficient, confusing, and frustrating process. The only plus is that our stuff got from Michigan to Richmond in one piece.Sarah R. | Online Move In

We used the VCU U-Haul facility to store items between college rentals. It’s very convent to the VCU campus, it is very well maintained and very clean. Unorganized to get truck keys. People who were last in line were first to get truck keys. It was a free for all. Should provide truck keys to those first in line or radio out to let truck employee know you are coming. Instead once ppl where done at counter they would bombard a truck employee for keys and no order to who was first. Lost a lot of time on my rental and day because of the disorganization on the lot. We only needed to store stuff for a short term. So the space was fine for what we needed. It is not so easy to load/unload in the area our unit was in. It was very crowded the morning we were loading from the unit. The area in the back parking lot was much less crowded, and if given a choice again I would choose something back there. The main issue was that we reserved a specific type of unit-main floor, no steps, a week in advance. We had limited helpers to move our stuff and my husband has back issues already. So I opted to pay extra for a first floor unit. When he arrived to get the unit he was told we had a walk up, because it is first come first serve. Which it does not state anywhere that that is the policy. Or we would have gone to the unit first to secure it, then to the apartment to load up. Why allow reservations if someone can come and take my unit? The staff was helpful, for what we needed them for, considering how busy they were. I had no issues with the building, security, or staff. Uhaul as a company needs to care for its locations with necessary upgrades, old system and equipment gave many of their employees trouble numerous times throughout my storage rental stay. An AC unit leaked into my storage space awhile back and even though I didn’t have the bogus rental insurance, i was not compensated from any of the items I threw out because of water damage.
