This has to be hands down the best U-Hual Location in the entire Chicagoland area! 9AM Equipment pickup on a Saturday in May? Great easy experience. Last time I tried renting a uhaul for a move another location didn't have a truck. I didn't use uhaul again after that. I was hesitant but this went perfectly. Will be using again for future moves. However this location is a bit of a maze and hard to navigate. It was kinda fun trying to find which part of the building to go to though. Ha ha. 24/7 process was BAD. I still had to go into office to get a key. They said it was because time for pickup was when office was open. But what if I came a bit earlier, when office was closed. I originally booked this location to drop the truck off at. However, apparently, the location had too many trucks parked at itâ€¦ so you guys changed it up on me last minute to drop it off at a â€œlotâ€ for auto shop. 2 things: 1. this so called â€œlotâ€ (at 2815 N Sheffield, Chicago, IL) DOES NOT EXIST and it's a sunday so the auto shop is closed. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE TO IMPOSE THIS ON A CUSTOMER WHEN THEY DID NOT SELECT THIS LOCATION FOR DROP OFF. I wasted 30mins of my time trying to find where to park this thing and was on hold with you guys the whole time to get NO HELP 2. If the location being booked has too much volume to service more trucksâ€¦ maybe don't make it available as a drop off location online, or prioritize trucks coming from out of town over local trucks because likeâ€¦ how the fuck am i supposed to where to go when I'm new to town? Few people at that location. Didn't catch the names, but the bearded white gentleman has a bad attitude and energy. Additionally, when I was returning the vehicle two guys (U-Haul Employees) we're literally swearing at each other, absolutely not helpful and borderline disrespectful, I hesitated and didn't approach them for any extra questions god forbid I have. This location was friendly and helpful, but VERY CONFUSING authorized driver situation - on the phone with the UHaul 800 number, they said all drivers should present licenses and be added as AUTHORIZED DRIVERS to the contract. This location that they wouldn't do that, said that any person with a valid driver license could drive the truck, but the contract makes clear that only the AUTHORIZED DRIVER is really authorized/covered by SafeMove insurance we purchased. LATER SPOKE TO AGM at another location who clarified that due to an error in the software, some locations can't add an extra driver license/authorized driver. I injured my knee right after picking up the truck and had to drive the truck cross country intead of my girlfriend due to this situation as the locations told me it was impossible to switch the truck once the truck was dispatched.Joel B.

Both the pick-up and drop-off locations were great. The issue was with the overall reservation process. I was supposed to pick up the equipment at a location in Largo, FL on April 1. The day before, I received a call telling me that I had to go to the location on Florida Ave. in Tampa since no trucks were available. I called that location on March 31 to confirm the truck would be available, but when I arrived there on April 1, I was informed that no truck was available. I had to take an Uber from that location to the Zephyrhills location, where I finally picked up the truck. In total, I spent nearly $100 in Uber rides, and UHAUL only gave me a discount of $60. Even that discount was not applied automatically by UHAUL. I had to ask again for it to be applied, and the proprietor at the Zephyrhills location graciously did so.Victor G.

Access to the units is not convenient. The loading/unloading area is in an inconvenient alley. The building loading entrance is several feet above ground level. It would be very difficult or impossible to get large items from a truck into the building. I had a 15’ truck and had to park outside the building with no street parking. The recommended alley was occupied by another truck. CSR was great but dragging my furniture up a long drive way/ramp was not something I was planning to do. Both the alley and driveway were not pedestrian friendly. The people were very helpful and hard working - no complaints about staff, although i could tell they have a lot to deal with in terms of the physical layout of this location. The customer evening access hours are too restrictive - 8pm is very inconvenient to deny access for loading or unloading. Most storage places allow at least til 9 or even til 11pm. Pleas reconsider these hours. Great availability of carts, smooth elevator and clear map and markings of storage units. However, the whole layout of the office - loading - drop off area is a nightmare. The building overall is very dirty (especially compared to most storage units) but my storage unit is gross! There are splatters of I-dont'-know-what on the wall, a giant rat trap in the corner by a wall of dirty chipped and flaking brick and paint. Your company needs to clean, repair, de-bug and repaint when a unit is emptied out - seriously. Most of that is basic maintenance. If there is a larger rat or mouse problem I'm sure that being addressed but how bad is it that there is a trap IN my unit? I'm concerned that there maybe rats or mice in my stuff while using this unit. I did not have time to address this with staff before I left town for the month. I didn't think i was going to have to take time to address such issues. I've rented vehicles form Uhaul several times over the years and have been happy with that service but I have to say if this is how your storage facilities are I am not inclined to use them again if even the basic cleanliness and appearance does not improve.Lisa S. | First Impressions

I don't know if it was just the weather or if the guy had a bad day, but he was just not helpful. He was kind of rude and only confused and made it harder to think about what I needed in the store. He insisted a queen sized bed would not fit in a 5x10x4 space but lo and behold it did! Same with all my extra large boxes that I stacked on top of each other. I think it was just a bad day but if I come into contact with that sort of behavior again, it'll just make my storage experience even more miserable than it already is. The employees were helpful and kind. It's the location and inside setup. Too many rude customers, traffic on Fullerton, no space to really park to unload. And for the inside, I was in the second floor and then had to walk up stairs to get to my space. It was a rough moving day for me. The location convenience was good, and employees were great, but it's too small for what you all are trying to accommodate. Also, I considered adding another storage unit because I thought all of my stuff would not fit, but the online process was difficult. I had to set up another profile and do the process all over. The original unit I was given had a massive pole in the entry way, so there way no chance my dresser or any other large object I needed to store would’ve fit. Why even rent this out? Not to mention the unit I switched to, I had to take all my things up a staircase and then again lift everything up 3 ft to get it up into the unit. This was completely unlike what the online description was. I would have never chosen this. The facility has horrible flooring so the carts bounce. I reserved a storage space 2 months ago, I show up yesterday and they say the only one available is not only smaller than what I reserved but also more expensive. Completely unacceptable. I had to throw away items because they wouldn’t fit. This will be the last time I ever use uhaul for storage and I can promise you I will be telling every one I know to never use uhaul for storage in Chicago. The gentleman who signed me up and checked me in was unbelievably rude and contrary. He should not be in a job where he deals with the public. I am older and dealing with mobility issues. I wanted the biggest unit that was easy to access and without stairs or difficult corners. He refused to try and help me until I told him how much space I needed, I repeated my requirements. He showed me the location of a couple on the map that were very difficult to access. Another employee overheard the conversation and suggested a unit that was large and very easy to access. He continued to check me in for my vehicle and was increasingly rude. All other employees of the facility were lovely, helpful, kind and cheerful.Lisa C. | First Impressions

I got there to take all my items out of my unit and a lock that wasn't mine was on the unit -- not one of the "you didn't pay you fee" locks, just a lock that wasn't mine. We called for some help and were rudely told by Rick, who I believe is actually the owner, that we had the wrong long. No one ever told us what the "right" lock was, but it seems like it was just a ploy on UHaul's end to steal more money from customers. When I reserved the storage unit for my daughter I called out all items that needed to be stored. The Uhaul customers service on the phone said a split would work & assigned me a unit. When I called to confirm reservation a different representative said I probably need a bigger one but did not tell me that in order to put items into it you had to go up 4 stairs to a landing & then lift stuff into unit. This was extremely hard & inconvenient for 2 petite girls in college. So the person at the actual facility gave them the option of getting a 2nd unit that was smaller to put their boxes in where they could manage it themselves because they didn’t have to go up stairs with them. The movers are going to put the 4 pieces of furniture in the bigger one which will have room left over. All other units were unavailable. So basically they have no other choice at this point but to spend extra money which they themselves did not have & rent 2 storage units when in actuality they only needed 1 large unit. Had it not been for the customer service person who gave me inadequate information on which unit to rent & did not tell me they would have to physically carry stuff up stairs, I could have gotten a large unit when I made the initial reservation. I even asked “Is there an elevator” she said yes. But failed to say that they would still have stairs to go up. I am out of state so I had to trust the customer service rep on the phone with the information she gave me. I am angry that we have to pay for 2 units when all we needed was one & I did call in enough advance time to have gotten just one. This is a huge inconvenience & waste of money that the girls did not have that they are now going to have to pay their parents back for.Sonya R. | First Impressions
The staff member who helped show me to my unit was helpful, but the employee working the register/in the office was clearly way overwhelmed. She was the only person working, and was taking about 20 minutes+ per/customer. I waited in line (with only one person in front of me) for about 40 minutes just to get shown my unit and get the keys. I had to pay my movers another $200 to wait for an hour because she took so long with each customer. On top of all of that, when I came back to uhaul later that day, my access card didn't even work- hadn't even been an hour since I received it/activated it. Overall it was a horrible experience and very unorganized. There needed to be more staff members working, and the ones who were working need to have a sense of urgency and efficiency, to understand people may not have all day to wait for them to finish chit chatting with the customers while there is a long line of customers waiting. Negative: Received a call the night before we were supposed to pick up the truck telling us that it was double booked and we'd need to go to a different location much further away. That being said, we reserved a truck 2 days before we needed it and it was on a very very busy moving weekend. When trying to re-book, we were on hold for at least 20 minutes each time we called. Positive: We drove back to Chicago during the riots and we were unable to put our stuff in the storage unit bc of the riots. Elevator is broken for the second day now with no way to access the large items. No contingency plan- no carts on upper floors to at least roll items to staircase, no door stoppers for staircase doors. Email should have been sent to all renters letting know of the issue so people do not show up with help, rented truck to find out that items can be accessed. I spoke to several reps about this rental, and everyone was extremely helpful and kind. Mike at the desk on a first visit and at check in time, Rick on the phone, Jasmine at a national call center, Tameka who phoned me to confirm the reservation and another Rick who took me to the storage space--and a very kind lady who received the returned van and gave me a printed receipt late Friday afternoon, 2/21/20, but whose name I don't know--everyone was most knowledgeable, patient, courteous and personable.
