Building History

In 1874, the York Manufacturing Co. was founded asa partnership between 6 men in York, Pennsylvania. The companies first successful development was an ice cream maker commissioned by a resident in Mississippi. It was not uncommon at the time for residents in the North to rely on ice from frozen lakes and rivers for their cooling and preservation needs. York Manufacturing Co. reimagined the world with methods to make and store ice and it would soon become their primary focus. In 1903, York was given an opportunity to create a large system for dehumidifying the blast-furnace air in a Carnegie Steel Company factory and hence marked their innovation and transition into air conditioning equipment. The company would go on to install an air conditioning system in the Empire Theatre in Montgomery, Alabama in 1914 and the first office building air conditioning system in 1923. The company continued to innovate and invent, bringing products like an automatic ice maker to the market in 1948.

Originally built in 1939, the York Pump & Equipment and Co. building was purchased for adaptive reuse by U-Haul in 1979.
