It was three years that I was with U-Haul and never had a problem except the price kept going up other that Thank you U-Haul for everything.

julia j. | Overall ExperienceI recently made a trip from Texas to North Carolina, after 14 years, to finally get my keepsakes out of storage and clean out the storage unit. My entire 3 bedroom house was contained in this storage unit, and I was extremely excited to finally go through these old memories, or so I thought. Upon arrival, I found that my lock has been cut and my unit has been moved. That was problem number 1, why was my unit moved? Finally, after speaking to management and explaining that I shouldn't be charged for the lock and key when I have my key on me, and the lock was cut without my knowledge, and without me present, the management allowed me to move forward without paying for that lock. Now, the maintenance man drilled out the lock, and I rolled up the unit door. At which point, my jaw dropped. My entire 3 bedroom house was dwindled down to a few boxes on one of the walls, a few trash bags, and a couple pieces of broken furniture. Everything else was gone! My beds, Livingroom sets, dining sets, 3 bedroom sets, most of my boxes of stuff; everything was gone. I immediately contacted the management and was met with even more questions. Nobody seemed to have any answers. As management went over the situation, I started looking at what I had left. As I opened boxes, I found mold, mildew, and rat/mouse infestations in the remaining boxes. Out of my storage unit, I was able to scrape together less than one medium sized tote of stuff to take home with me. This included about a quarter of my service awards, one class A jacked with ribbons, half of my baseball cards I had as a child, and maybe 20 of my 500-1000 pictures. Everything else was destroyed. Management got back to me while at the unit. Apparently there was a hurricane that went through in 2016, and my unit was underwater. They moved my unit and threw away everything that was wet. The unit was essentially a total loss. I have been paying for this unit for 14 years. Why couldn't they tell me that my unit was underwater and everything was destroyed? UHauls answer to this? We tried to contact you. Really!?!?! You sure have the ability to send me a bill, verify I paid it, and call when payments are going up, but you can't contact me to tell me everything in my unit has been destroyed by a hurricane?!?!?!?! REALLY!!!!! Anyway, I continued to pay the bill thinking everything was fine with my unit for an additional 7 years. Afterall, what I don't know keeps them getting paid for the unit. What did management tell me? I need to submit an insurance claim, and they will need an itemized list of everything destroyed. How am I supposed to produce an itemized list of everything in that storage unit when it was an entire 3 bedroom house, especially trying to remember 14 years ago, and they 95% of it away without my knowledge? Now, the insurance garbage I have been dealing with. I tried to contact the insurance carrier for Uhaul , the one that handles the claims, and literally never heard anything. Nobody answered the phone, nobody emailed me, nobody returned the call. I left voicemail after voicemail, and no replies. I tried for weeks to no end, and finally gave up. I guess the way insurance claims work is if nobody answers the phone, I guess my claim cannot be submitted. No submitted claim means no refund for 14 years (7 minimal) and repayment of the furnishings for an entire 3 bedroom house. To answer your question, "Please rate your overall experience storing with U-Haul?" I wouldn't do business with Uhaul if they literally got on their knees and begged me. The audacity to send me that question, after my experience, Uhaul should be absolutely ashamed.
