Columbia, SC Moving Tips and Services

State capital and largest city in the state of South Carolina, Columbia is officially nicknamed “The Capital of Southern Hospitality.” Unofficially, Columbia is also referred to as Cola or Soda Town and Famously Hot. Home to more than 100,000 residents and part of a metropolitan area of nearly 800,000, Columbians love their city and pride themselves in good manners; it isn’t uncommon for them to greet you and smile as you pass by. • Where to Live – Based on what you’re looking for, there are many neighborhoods in Columbia to consider. One popular area is Shandon, which has a variety of old craftsman style homes and access to nearby amenities. Downtown Columbia also has experienced an economic revitalization, with new businesses and housing options springing up. For a more suburban lifestyle, the Irmo/Ballentine area will be more along the lines of what you’re looking for. For students of the University of South Carolina, there are many apartment complexes situated around school and Main Street for your convenience. Of course, this is just a small sample of amazing places to live in Columbia, but it’s a great place to start your search if you are still unsure of where to live.
  • Staying Dry – Not only is Columbia “Famously Hot”, it also gets an average of 43 inches of rainfall annually. To make sure the rain doesn’t disrupt your moving day, we’d recommend moving in January, April, September or October; each of these months average less than 3 inches of precipitation. Of course, if your move date is not in one of these months, adding Moving Help® to your reservation can keep you dry while the pros do the unloading.
  • Getting Around – When it comes to public transportation, Columbia has recently revamped its bus system, the COMET. It has implemented over 30 more routes and stretches out to more rural areas. However, much of the city is spread out, so you may need your own vehicle to get from place to place. Luckily, it’s a focal point between three interstates which makes its easy to access different areas of the city as well as areas outside of the city.
  • Job Opportunities – Columbia has a strong military and scholarly presence, and with it, many related job opportunities. The city is located adjacent to Fort Jackson, the military’s largest entry training base, and the McEntire Joint National Guard Station. Columbia is also home to the University of South Carolina and ten other universities.
