SAFETY ISSUE -- POOR MAINTENANCE & DISREGARD FOR SAFETY – BROKEN PASSENGER MIRROR -- I rented a truck from the Shawley Drive Hagerstown Maryland location. The move required travel on I-81 into Pennsylvania. As I was traveling north I-81, I move from the right lane to the left lane to pass a slower vehicle. When ready to move back to the right lane, I realized the passenger side mirror had shifted in the wind and I was completely blind as to what was beside me and if it was safe to change lanes. I tried passing another vehicle to gain some distance before taking my chances to move back blindly into the right lane. I thought I had heard a horn and suspect I almost was in an accident. Being unsettled by the safety condition of the truck, I avoided any further lane changes. When I got to my pickup, I called U-Haul and spoke to Kenny (Kenneth Pheil, Assistant Moving Center Manager). He refused to take responsibility of the broken mirror and said he relies on reports from renters. He advised me to take the truck to another station, but this would cause me to add hours to moving team I had hired. So, he said it could be fixed with an alan wrench and I agreed to try fixing it. He also suggested I get a video. (see attached video showing how incredibly loose the mirror was). I adjusted the mirror and tighten the screw with the alan wrench. Later when returning the truck, I spoke again to Kenny to express my concerns regarding the safety issue. I showed him the video. He didn’t seem to care and was flipid. I told him there was no way the mirror could have been that loose, except over time. He then said that he personally checked the truck in and inspected it the evening before and it was fine. I told him there was no way it loosened like that overnight. He insisted again he did a safety check. I asked him if he was implying I broke it to complain. Then goes onto ask why I would drive it like that. I told him I realized when I was already on the highway and in the left lane. Kenny’s flipid and arrogant approach to safety was terrible. He held no responsibility to safety of the trucks as he kept deflecting responsibility. His apathy and arrogance is shocking considering he was the assistant manager with his staff taking his lead. I asked for a copy of their last safety inspection report and he refused to give it to me. I told him that I would report it (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) , MDOT, U-Haul corporate, and social media). He said he didn’t care what I did. He did give me the business card of the General Manager. And, he did give me a small discount on the per mileage maintenance fee (although I asked for the full maintenance fee to be refunded because the truck wasn’t maintained and had a serious safety issue). ….Roll forward to the following Monday, I called Kurt Hoffman, the General Manager. He acknowledged that Kenny told him about the situation this morning. Kurt was much more respectful in our disc

The vehicle had the wrong mileage on it at the beginning, the wrong mileage was calculated at the end causing a $84. Increase. When the vehicle was stuck the road side assistanc was not helpful. One employee had to be told to be “nice “. I was charged a cleaning fee for mud on the outside of the truck. Never again

The Auto Transporter was rusty and the ramps were hard to get out. I had to call the service center for directions on how to lower ramps. I used a cheater bar to release one the ramps. The transporter should be retired.

When I walked in to this Hagerstown site, they were busy with a difficult client. I answered that the personnel were helpful above bc when they finally got to me, the young man was very helpful and efficient and I didn’t want this reflect poorly on him. However, when I first arrived, I stood in the office for about 20mins and no one so much as said ‘we will be with you shortly, we are experiencing high volume on a short staffed day, we have a difficult situation that just dropped in on us, and we are using all our resources to deal with that, etc.’. There were other clients who came in behind me and it was the same—-no acknowledgment. We all stood around staring at the ceiling and each other waiting for someone to let us know they saw us and to give direction/assistance. There were also multiple phone calls that one employee put on hold and then never appeared to go back to, so I’m betting those customers weren’t very happy—but that could just be my perception. The sad part is, there were two guys on staff, there needed to be more on this busy Sun am, and it appeared that one guy was being trained by the other bc he didn’t seem to be able to work the software to check a truck out without input from the other fellow, who was very busy on his own (especially answering the phones and putting people on hold) working with clients with questions. They were doing their best—but the person responsible for scheduling staff at this Uhaul should know that they need to hire more people for weekends at this facility, and provide extra help when training people!

It was great to rent from this location. I called last minute very close to closing and the gentleman was very patient with me which I thank him for. The vehicle was great for the Girl Scout leader to load up our delicious cookies. Thanks so much!

Tell the older man that works there to be less grumpy and to be friendly to customers! He by as a bad attitude.

The truck leaked water and damaged my belongings, we were told that we would have to talk to a manager in 3 days, and we didn’t have insurance so it’s our fault... unacceptable.

When I picked up the truck Saturday morning 2/2/2019 it was below 32 degrees. I started the truck and sat in the parking lot over 20 minutes. The tempature gage never moved. I got out and hand scraped the ice off the windshield. I drove 10 miles to the move from location and still the temp. gage never moved. I called the Maugansville location. they said still use the truck because it was so cold it would take a while to warm up. NOT. I drove from Hagerstown to Hancock the gage never moved. I thought I was going to have to to pull off the road going over the mountain for the windshield fogging / icing up. When I got to hancock I called them again. There reaction was as long as it is not over heating im good to go. NOT... I had NO heat the entire move. I drove a total of 72 miles and the temp gage never moved. When I got back to Maugansville I told them about it. They really were not concerned. Was told again with a little laugh as long as it was not over heating I was good to go. Although I received an e mail saying I was getting a 25 $ refund , well that does not even cover the rental price of the truck. Really disappointed in U haul this time. Worse experience I have had with u haul. Disappointed in the lack of concern by the staff of U haul in maugansville.

Outstanding team lead by Kurt. Always accommodating, personable, professional, just love working with this location. Can’t say that about Jefferson Street location in Frederick.

The human interaction at this location leaves quite a bit to be desired. A greeting when you walk in the door goes a long way for most. I myself work in the service industry and would never have a customer walk in and have to awkwardly stand for several seconds before acknowledging them. The after hours truck return process is a complete crap show and is most likely the reason i would rent from someone else the next time.
