This was our worst U-Haul experience by far and we wonâ€™t be using Uhaul again. Although we booked a month in advance at our preferred location, Uhaul switched us to this location the day before our move. The location was not open when we arrived to pick up the Uhaul. We had to call the number on the door and waited nearly half an hour for someone to show up. Then the truck we were supposed to have (and had already completed the online check in for) was unavailable because the shop owner said it had been reported stolen, although it was sitting in the lot. Then the shop owner informed us that the only truck available was a â€œrotatorâ€ truck that couldnâ€™t be left in a different city, so we had to drive the truck all the way back to Chicago from the suburbs after a long day of moving. He also tried to hand us keys to a new truck without changing anything in the system and we had to insist on getting all the information updated before accepting the truck. When we finally got the truck an hour and a half after our pick up time, it was filthy and smelled of smoke and the gas tank was completely empty. It was a terrible way to start out the move.
Lot where the equipment is located is on a vary busy street and difficult to get in. Office and lot are in different locations and takes way too long to get checked in and hooked up.

This is not U-Haul facility. The vendor's shop is located at the busy street. The vendor by himself was friendly and did his work well but I'd rather go to the location with an enclosed parking lot where I could do the truck walk around inspection off street.

Inform customers when the location is closed (during opening hours) of the phone number to contact for further information. It is also imperative to inform of the possibility to go through the app(not only showing a link on the door) in order for the customers to know that it is the only way to get a truck in that case. Please consider that in my case, the lack of this information made me spend hours on the phone, hours of delay on my schedule and big misunderstanding with the business responsible accusing me of stealing the truck and other details with Uhaul team telling me that I did not had picked up the truck and therefore it was not insured, as if it was my fault . All that on a moving day after a day of debate with your team about picking up locations since one of your colleagues confirmed one location, I received a text with another one less than 16h before pickup and had to debate with another person in order to have a truck at least in the city I chose(even if it was miles away from the chosen and initially confirmed by your staff location).
I wanted to pick my truck up in Des Plaines or a NW Suburban location. My pick up was switched to a Chicago location that had the size truck I reserved, but was in the city and out of my way.

Far distance between office and the truck and the mobile instructions had me walking between them a couple times in a neighborhood that made me not want to be a woman alone walking between the locations.
First of all, I choose a location close to streeterville when I booked the UHaul. The location got changed and I was never notified. On the day of the pick up I had to take a Lyft for 35minutes to Oak Park - only to get there and find out the truck is not at this location but at another one. So I had to order another Lyft to get to the second and very sketchy location to pick up the truck. It was an awful experience and I paid more money on picking up the truck that I planned for!
The truck was 1 block away. Please contact me ...why was I charged $38.00 for gas when I returned the truck with more gas then was in it when I picked it up. ?

I helped make his load easier and returned the truck. Very professional.
Store was closed when I arrived promptly at pickup time (10:00 a.m.). The store owner did not show up for a half hour and then showed up to halfheartedly apologize. Once he got me processed everything was fine with the truck and the equipment, but that's the last time I pick up at an independent small business instead of a U-Haul storefront with the big logo and the array of trucks. Because of his lateness, the movers I hired showed up without anything to do, and I ended up going over the prepaid hours and having to pay an additional $85. Usually get good results from U-Haul but this was disappointing.
Facility was extremely dirty. Staff was not knowledgeable. The manager called me to confirm the contract on his cell phone while he was driving. The other staff member asked me to sign a blank loose leaf paper as the contact itself. Very unprofessional. I'm not sure how uhaul keeps them as a vendor. I didn't have the full equipment in the truck. The truck itself smelled like cigarettes and was extremely dirty. Would not recommend this. I'm never using uhaul again because of this terrible experience.
They only gave me 20 blankets and not 24. Please ask them and you will see.
We originally requested to have a Uhaul at 8am at the Harlem location in Forest Park which is only a few blocks from our apartment. We received confirmation and then the day before our move we received a new confirmation email that told us to go to the second chance barber shop that was a little farther away and in a dangerous neighborhood. On top of that it was an hour later than we needed. Upon showing up the place was not even open and no-one was there. We called and the guy showed up around 9:30 to give us the truck. While he was nice, the truck was not filled up with the gas it was supposed to be filled up with which he let us know. It was extremely unprofessional and a huge inconvenience considering we only had the freight elevator in our building reserved for a certain amount of time. We ended up going over our allotted amount of time and people who had it after us had to wait for us to finish up. The whole experience was bad. Moving is already stressful and this was an unacceptable way to add more stress to the day.

Bad experience as moved from requested site to another location with a later opening time so loss almost two hours. Topper was business next door was the one who informed me of rental's hours and then - so nice of the owner - called to inform him of customer waiting at site. Central scheduling should better at manage scheduling\ opening times to requested locations and times.
Website listed open time as 9:00 am but didn't open til 10. Called and they did send someone early but he didn't know how to check out a truck, had to call someone for assistance, took 40 minutes. Truck had almost NO gas in it. Agent (Antoine) did not tell us that we had to turn it in with at least 1/4 tank, and sign on visor says it has to be dropped off with the same amount of fuel it had when we picked it up. I did get gas on my way to drop it off, so that it had more than when we picked it up, and still had to pay for fuel because it was less than a quarter tank. Wrong drop off location listed and there was confusion over whether I would be penalized for bringing it to the "wrong" location, but I don't think I was. Everyone was nice but it wasn't a great experience. Need to rent a truck again next weekend and thinking hard about other companies
