I waited for exactly an hour to enter the store and get the van. I booked online and checked in online also.
Great customer service from everybody. The van was clean and well maintained.
I received the van with less than a quarter of a tank which was frustrating because I literally had to go get gas before being able to use my rental for its intended purpose. Staff was nice and friendly, efficient too.
Reservation was changed then canceled. No Dollies available. Went to drop off truck after hours per my conversation with Uhaul over the phone. There was no after hours drop off. Uhaul confirmed that in the AM. THis added $60 to my order. I will not be using Uhaul or recommending them to friends moving in NYC.
Check in/check out was very smooth. The only thing I would change (which I'm sure is not specific to your location) would be when reserving the vehicle to include the facility fee in the advertised price because it is dishonest to say "$19.99/day" when the base price is actually double that.
I cannot overemphasize that this is not a reflection of the staff at the location. They were diligent and courteous and doing their best despite being woefully understaffed. But the line was out the door and down the block, there was no one outside to provide information to those waiting in line, and if it's going to take 45 minutes to an hour to get a vehicle you reserved and did pre-check-in for, the confirmation email should warn you ahead of time. I lost time and money on the movers I hired because this process took so long.
Don't hide the fees
On a Friday before the end of the month would suggest having more help at the desk so that the wait is less than 20 minutes. While the truck for the most part was clean, the windshield was very dirty. Also, it would be much better if the truck was full rather than only 1/4 tank, especially in NYC where gas stations for 15' trucks are limited. Finally, it would be nice to have a USB port for mobile phones instead of the old car chargers - most people don't carry the old car chargers around.
I did not choose the $25 damage waiver but was forced to purchase it when I checked in at the counter. The cashier just put it on and let me sign on the sheet. Very tricky and bad experience!
The equipment was clean but once I got to the location the guy opened the door to the in a terrible mood. Once left the location I realized that I left a piece of the table I was moving, I called and they said they cleaned it out and nothing was found. When I decided to go back and check they said the same thing and then when I decided to re look I found it in the dumpster.
Rate is too high - WE GOT charged $181 ... for a day rental when you stated $19,99

Please note, this is a complaint of U-Haul's business practices overall - not specific to this location (while I did rent from this location). I made a reservation 4 weeks in advance for a one way rental. In my order confirmation I received a note that read "A local U-Haul representative will call you by 6pm the day prior to get agreement on and schedule available time, equipment and location". The day before my move I received a text message at 4pm stating that due to the high volume of reservations of the truck size I had reserved I would have to switch to a different truck size. When I called in, I was told that the truck size was available, but that they could not honor one-way reservations, and let me know that my only option was to take a round trip reservation. I called around to other rental agencies near me to check availability as paying $2.29 a mile becomes expensive quickly, but there was no availability at such short notice and so I was forced to continue with U-Haul with a round-trip reservation. I then incurred twice as much expenses (double the toll fees, double the mileage (over 100 miles each way), as well as purchasing train tickets to return to the location that I was trying to move to after returning the truck), plus the truck I was provided was in rough condition - the driver's side door did not shut properly. When I spoke to the representative the day prior they informed me that I would be receiving my reservation guarantee of $50 back and that I should receive most of my miles back. I did not get the reservation guarantee back because "U-Haul technically did not cancel my reservation" and I only received reimbursement for a quarter of my miles. U-Haul is using Covid 19 as an opportunity to turn a profit of at least 50% per client by pulling this bait and switch. In total, I am out close to $400 because I chose to use U-Haul. If you are looking to move and live in the tri-state area, I recommend that you do not use U-Haul.
This was a much better experience overall. I will say that I tried to engage in a conversation with the staff about the issue with the truck, and they weren't overly interested in hearing about it. Maybe it was because what I was trying to describe is normal, but they didn't really say whether that was the case or not.
Hire some customers friendly professional people for the front desk , someone that LIKES to work there, I will never rent from you again
The hand truck I reserved was not available. They were very understanding when I had to keep the van over the weekend as I was not able to get the items to the storage facility before it closed on Friday (was unable to move items as quickly as planned without the more efficient hand truck).
Reserved 2 Dollys, and was not told until I was at the counter - that they were not available, BUT there were Dollys available to buy.
The U-haul national line told me this location was 24 hours, but it was not. When I called the U-haul national line to ask where the nearest 24 hour location was, the line hung up on me. We had to find over night parking and return it the following day.
I received a text indicating that this location accepted 24/7 drop-off. When I arrived at 11 pm it was closed and there was a sign on the door saying that they do not accept 24/7 drop-off. This is unacceptable. At least I was reimbursed for the extra miles because of your negligence.
