My wife and I were wary about renting a Uhaul on the weekend from a facility that didn't keep weekend hours, but we were told on the phone that it would be an easy process. This was hardly the case. My wife set up the account and added me as an authorized driver of the vehicle. We were forwarded an email with a link from uhual which was intended to start our rental pickup. The link was broken and we had to caul customer service to get it fixed. This took about 20 minutes waiting on hold. When speaking to the customer service rep on the phone I asked if we could process the order over the phone. She did have our account pulled up on the computer at the time. I was told they could not process the pickup over the phone. I asked, "what if the internet service on my smartphone doesn't work, am I out of luck?" Response was "I guess so". After the email link was fixed I began the online checkin process. The GPS feature said I wasn't at the correct location - I was. After roaming around the parking lot for another 10 minutes I got past that step. Then I uploaded my ID and self photo. After waiting another 10 minutes for someone to verify my identity, I finally got an IM from a fellow human saying that she needed the ID and photo of my wife. I asked if I could send it to her. Response was "No, she has to be on-site." That would have been nice to know before we made arrangements for me - the authorized driver to pick up the vehicle. She had to drive 20 minutes to the rental location to take a selfie and then drive back home - what a waste of our time and resources. We finally got through the checkout process after about 2 hours from the time I arrived at the rental location. When I returned to drop the vehicle off, I entered the odometer reading and the system rejected it saying it was less than the odometer reading at pickup - It was not, I checked it several times and referenced photos I had taken at pickup. I had to wait on hold for customer service again, and was told to just leave the keys and someone would check the vehicle out in the morning. Here is a question I have for Uhaul - if you are offering this 24/7 pickup and dropoff service are you clearly telling prospective buyers that they must have a smartphone and be well equipped to use it (I know older people in my family who never would have gotten though this even with a smartphone), they must have good internet service at the pickup location, the person who made the reservation must physically be on site to pick up the vehicle, if they have questions they can gladly wait on hold for up to 30 minutes to talk to someone in customer service, and if by chance the internet or their smartphone is not working they are essentially out of luck and no one will help them complete their order. If uhaul intends to continue this service they seriously need to think about these things. I am highly dissatisfied with this experience and will never do it again.
