But what a lot of DIY movers don’t realize is the need to de-compress after the completion of a move and before resuming the regular nine-to-five grind. If you don’t get a little bit of relaxation in, you may never get back to 100% — which is not a good way to start your life in a new place.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-12342" class=" wp-image-12342 " src="https://movinginsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/4140229373_2622dc5c9f_o.jpg" alt="Relaxing after a move can be a great way to keep yourself motivated and ready to take on the week ahead. Image via twicepix Flickr/CC

To help mitigate this problem, the staff at Moving Insider has come up with the top five ways for you to relax after your DIY move.

5. Explore Your New Home

Sometimes a relaxing stroll around the park can be a great way to relax and clear the mind. We can easily replace the park location with the Main Street in your new home town, a public meeting space or maybe even the town square. Getting out and exploring is also a great way to get your bearings — figure out where all the stores are and where to get the essentials, like groceries and gas.

4. Shop

My future wife will find this post and use it against me I’m sure, but I’m not afraid to say it. Shopping is a great way to get out and interact with the locals — who knows, you may even find your next favorite store. I would assume that you’ll need a few items in your new home anyway, so getting out and doing a little shopping can really help you out in the end.

3. Watch a Movie

Assuming you’ve got everything unpacked find the box with the TV entertainment stuff and pull out your favorite movie. A movie can provide an escape from the stress of moving even if only for a few hours. Your favorite movie can also touch your emotions and put you at ease in your new home. If you aren’t all un-packed yet don’t forget about things like Netflix and other online streaming sites — you can watch the movies on your computer!

2. Cook a Meal at Home

Road trips aren’t always the best way to eat gourmet — I know in my own experiences, the road trip diet consists of gas stations and fast food. It really doesn’t sound like the best plan, and trust me, it isn’t. Having a nice home cooked meal can put an end to that. The actual cooking itself can be a great way to relax as well.

1. Take a Nap

It might seem like the easiest idea, but taking a short power nap after unpacking really is a great way to make sure you are ready for the adventures to come. Moving in itself is an adventure; packing up and driving, and then unpacking in a new location can really drain you. Getting some quality rest will allow your body and mind to recover.

What are your favorite tips for relaxing after a big move?
