In the third installment of a four blog post series, we will be exploring the island of Maui, and the unique qualities of this resort island that makes up the Hawaiian Archipelago for those who may be considering moving to Hawaii.

Maui – The Valley Isle

From long stretches of beautiful white sand beaches to the summit of Mount Haleakala, it is no wonder that Maui is consistently mentioned as the most popular island in the Hawaiian Islands. With a total population of just over 145,000+, it is the third largest island in size within the Hawaiian archipelago. While Wailuku is considered the county seat of Maui, Kahalui, the main airport location and center of commerce, has the greatest number of full time residents.

Would’t you love to wake up to this every day?

According to Hawaiian legend, the island was named after the warrior demigod Maui. It is also known as the “Valley Isle”, referring to the large separation between the Northwestern and Southeastern volcanic peaks that give Maui its unique geography. An awe-inspiring visit to the summit of Mount Haleakala to view the sunrise is often mentioned as a life changing event for many. Mount Haleakala rises an incredible 10,000+ feet above sea level, making it one the world’s tallest mountains when measured from the seafloor.

Other Maui towns of note that must not be missed are: Lahaina, Kihei, Ka’anapali, Kapalua, Kula, Pa’ia, and Hana. Of course, it’s the impressive selection of beaches, snorkeling, windsurfing, kite-surfing, world-class golf and sport fishing that beckons new visitors, and keeps them coming back. It’s not surprising why Humpback whales by the thousands migrate into Maui’s warm waters year after year; why not consider joining them?

This post comes from Todd Barrett, whose lifelong dream of living in Hawaii became a reality when he moved to Kona in 2000.
