Whether it’s in the kitchen with various cooking utensils shoved somewhere or it’s in your office, filled with paper clips and pens, the junk drawer becomes a continuously growing mess. With Spring in the air, it’s time to get started on one of the smaller spring cleaning tasks out here: organizing your junk drawer.

Empty out your junk drawer

The first step to organizing your drawer is by analyzing exactly what it is you’re working with. Throw out anything in there that would be considered junk. This isn’t just limited to the crumpled up pieces of paper or mystery packing peanut scraps stuffed in there, but also expired makeup and worn-down pencils. If you aren’t going to use it, get rid of it.

Sort things out

Everything should have a designated place. Start by putting like items together — letter openers, box cutters, and scissors should all be together as blade-like items while tape, paper clips, pins, and glue all keep things together. Some rules go for organizing your junk drawer in the kitchen — separate knives, spoons, and forks then larger items like your spatulas or tongs.

Put everything away

The final step to organizing your junk drawer is putting everything back in the drawer. Separate the compartments using organizing trays or containers of some sort. If you’re just looking to put up dividers in your drawer, you could use leftover cardboard and make them yourself. Any items that don’t match this newly organized drawer can then be re-located elsewhere. Anything that you don’t want to toss out but doesn’t fit there can be stored separately in a box or storage container somewhere in the house.

If you’re getting ready for a move, small organization and cleaning tasks like these will make the process go much smoother when the time comes.

Do you have a junk drawer than needs de-cluttered?
