Did you know that car crashes are the leading cause of death for 15 to 24-year-olds? It\u2019s not gang rage, gun violence, teen suicide, or some horrific disease \u2013 it\u2019s car crashes. That\u2019s what\u2019s killing our youth. In 2014 alone, over 32,000 Americans died in an automobile crash. It\u2019s an epidemic, but it\u2019s one we can actively do something about and have a dynamic voice in prevention.<\/p>\n
There are a variety of ways that you can make a difference in your community:<\/p>\n
Glad you asked. When my son Hunter was killed in a car crash at age 16, we immediately started a campaign to warn youth of the possible dangers that await you in a car. We created a scholarship competition where young people speak out to their peers and spread the word about the deadly consequences of driving distracted. There\u2019s no one better to talk about this then those who are most impacted \u2013 you have the ability to connect and resonate with each other in a way that adults can\u2019t touch.<\/p>\n
The result was Project Yellow Light\/Hunter Garner Scholarship \u2013 a scholarship competition for high school junior & seniors and college students. What started in Hunter\u2019s high school is now a national competition reaching young people throughout the country. Project Yellow Light partners with the Ad Council, Clear Channel Outdoor, Mazda Motorsports, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, National Organizations for Youth Safety and U-Haul.<\/p>\n
There are two arms to the competition:<\/p>\n
Both contests provide an opportunity for you to do good, to gain some notoriety, and most importantly \u2013 to make a difference.<\/p>\n
