And don’t worry, we’re not expecting you to be a towing expert! That’s what we’re here for. Here’s what to expect when installing a hitch.

What Is a Hitch?

A hitch is an automotive accessory commonly installed onto a vehicle’s back. This provides the connection between the vehicle and the trailer. In simpler terms, it connects your car, van, or truck to whatever you’re towing. Safely and secure, of course. After your hitch has been installed, your vehicle’s utility value is increased. It is good to note that hitches are also usually considered permanent.

What Are the Types of Hitches?

There are several types and sizes of hitches. A receiver hitch (also known as a trailer hitch) is the type you’ll use to tow a trailer. The right one depends on your vehicle and what you want to tow. Because there are so many different vehicles to install hitches to, the design and installation process of your hitch will depend on a few things:

Weight ratings (maximum tow capacity)

Bumper styles

Accessibility to the right attachment points on your vehicle

Appearance

Receiver hitches come in two sizes:

1-1/4″ (lighter loads like bike racks)

2″ (most common hitch size)

So, receiver or trailer hitches can tow a range of different weights. Two weights to be concerned with are gross trailer weight (GTW) and tongue weight (TW). Gross trailer weight is the weight of the trailer fully loaded in its actual towing condition. The tongue weight is the downward force the trailer exerts on the hitch ball. The TW is typically about 10% to 15% of the GTW.

Here’s a visual showing how to determine your TW and GTW capacities:

U-Haul installs hitch with trailer weight capacities from 2,000 lbs. to 17,000 lbs. based on your needs and the towing capacity of your vehicle.

Check out our towing glossary for an in-depth look at all hitch types and other towing terms.

Installing A Hitch

What to Expect

If picking out a hitch alone scares you, it’s okay! You won’t have to select your hitch by yourself, and you won’t have to install it. (If you feel comfortable, then more power to you!) From the time you walk into one of our various locations, know that you are purchasing the right hitch with the help of our professional technicians. There are a couple of variables when it comes to installing a hitch.

U-Haul hitches are custom-made for your vehicle. Most hitches attach using existing bolt holes with the nuts and bolts to attach the hitch. A U-Haul Hitch Professional evaluates where the hitch will be installed before starting. If any attachment points are missing, our trained members have the tools to create them. Components may be in the way of a hitch installation, so they’ll temporarily disconnect and reinstall afterward.

It’s good to know what parts will potentially be removed.
