United we stand in a time of need<\/p><\/div>\n

Superstorm Sandy brought devastation to many businesses and residents on the East coast.  In this time of need, total strangers pitched in to help those  affected.  In this week’s Insider Scoop we look at an impressive convoy of moving trucks<\/a> heading to New Jersey to be filled with relief supplies to help these victims.  This mission was lead by the Red Cross, working with U-Haul and the community.  Volunteers were recruited to drive 54 moving trucks to the Jersey shore to help with recovery in Sandy’s aftermath. The trucks left from both Bridgeport and Danbury, where they then headed to the American Red Cross Warehouse in Jersey City to be packed up with donations. One of the volunteers set up a Facebook page<\/a> for volunteers to share photos from this mission.<\/p>\n

Moving Truck Convoy headed to Jersey City<\/p><\/div>\n

The volunteer driver effort was coordinated by  Kathryn Cross, Gold Star Mother and Max Sabrin from Saybrook Fire Department.  They truly came through  for U-Haul and the American Red Cross by coordinating all of the volunteers and logistics involved with ensuring the volunteers had return transportation coordinated.  They also coordinated the escort by the  CT State Police Department as well as the donations from Foxwoods Casinos for donating two buses, Jamms of Old Saybrook and Two Brothers Pizza in Salem for donating lunch to all the volunteers – all within a 48 hour time period! Volunteers included U-Haul team members,  Gold Star mother Kathyrn Cross, off-duty firefighters, police officers, military veterans and everyday people who want to do what they can to help. There were 54 trucks in this convoy, but in total Red Cross used over 100 U-Haul trucks for their Sandy relief efforts.  This was an impressive display of coordination, and compassion by all the volunteers, U-Haul and the Red Cross!<\/p>\n
