If you live in a small space, it can sometimes seem that the only way to free up space is to get rid of some of your worldly possessions. Luckily, that’s simply not true. With a little creativity and the right furniture, you can turn your apartment, office, or other small space into an efficient one with ample storage. Below are some of my favorite tips for maximizing storage in small spaces.

Use EVERY space. Most people will think to place shelves at eye-level, or within arm’s reach. But, when you’re working with very little space, you have to maximize all of it; specifically, when it comes to shelving. Don’t hesitate to place shelves, cabinets, or rods from floor to ceiling. Store the items you use often on the more accessible levels, and the items rarely used on the higher ones.

Purchase furniture that is multifunctional. My favorite cure for people with little storage is everyday furniture that doubles as storage. Some of my favorite variations of this are

Storage ottomans as a coffee table

Storage benches for extra seating

Storage headboards

Don’t forget about under the bed! When you are limited on space, the bed can be one piece of furniture that really takes up a lot of it. Instead of writing this space off, think of how you can use the space above or below it for storage. Some great examples are

Under the bed pull-out drawers. These are great for storing off-season clothing and extra linens.

Headboards that provide built in storage. This storage is great for books, magazines, or even a pull-out work desk.

Put posts on risers to add height. This will give you more room to add storage containers that are taller.

Choose storage systems that work together. For example, when you are ready to purchase your storage shelves, make sure they are the same dimension as your containers, or larger.

Always remember, a big component of effective space maximization is planning. With the proper planning, you can integrate the tips above and enjoy your living space without the extra clutter. Take some time to map out the different options for your space. Experiment in your brainstorming with a mixture of shelving, cabinets, and high and low options.
