Keep It or Toss It? Packing up Your Home for the Move

May 31, 2012

Packing up the items in your home for the big move can be a great opportunity to organize things and get rid of old items. But, how do you know which items to keep and which items to toss?

Our guide below will help you determine the best items to take with you and the best things to donate.

Keep It:

packingDishes: Your entire dish set may take time and care to pack, but hanging onto it is worth it. Purchasing dishes for your new home can take a large chunk out of your budget. Plus, the ones you have already will likely last for several years to come. Opt for an inexpensive and easy option to take them with you, like a dish saver kit.

Towels and Linens: Sheets and towels are lightweight and easy to pack, so you should take them with you. Once you are in your new home, simply run them through the laundry and they are ready to use; no special care needed.

Toss It:

Clothing: If you haven’t worn something in more than a year, you likely won’t ever wear it again. Consider donating these clothes to your local second hand store to save room in your wardrobe box on packing day. Also, if you are moving to a warmer climate and will no longer need your heavy outerwear, chances are that someone nearby could use it.

packingDisposable Dining Ware: Items like plastic cutlery and paper plates are inexpensive and easy to find. Instead of taking these items with you, see if your neighbors would like to be the opportune recipients of them. Doing so will save you time, and you can purchase more at your first trip to your new neighborhood’s grocery store.

When packing the items in your home, be sure to consider both the ease of transport and the cost to replace items you are unsure about. Getting rid of items you no longer use will cut your moving costs and your clutter.
