Planning Ahead: Mapping your Move

Mapping your Move

Map out your move across the country!

Spring has sprung and summer is here so it’s time to plan ahead and make the most of your summer move. Almost every city or town has a story to it, whether it’s something in history books, the population size or being home to some of the best eats around. Take a few minutes to search the cities and towns you’ll be traveling through to see if there is anything that interests you.

Mapping your route: You can make the most of your move if you take time to explore the cities you travel through. Schedule time slots within your moving agenda to spend an hour at a national park or walk around a pier. Have little ones? A lot of towns have local eateries that cater to children or great family style restaurants. You’ll create more memories at a place you’ve planned to go to, versus stopping at a fast food restaurant.

If you’re moving with a family, this is a great time to have everyone pitch in to decide fun places to visit together. You’ll be creating more of a family trip rather than a family move. Creating a fun map for the kids to follow along with will add to the excitement and keep them involved during the journey. Include rest stops, historical sites, fun facts and hotels. If you want to keep them on their toes, disguise an activity as a mystery stop so they have something to look forward to.

Rest stops: In addition to fun facts, mapping out your move lets you know how many miles until the next stop to take a break. If you are traveling with family and pets, look for rest stops that have restrooms and a place to refuel on water and snacks. Moving in the summer requires hydration and energy to stay healthy and alert. Knowing your next stop gives you the advantage of planning a safe place to pull over and get fresh air.

Check out historical sites and national monuments along the way!

Overnight stays: Knowing you have a place to rest your head after a long day of traveling is as important as having fuel in your truck. The last thing you want to do is be on the road waiting for the next hotel and find out it’s not what you expected. Comparing hotel costs and locations within the route of your move gives you the flexibility to pick and choose where you stay. If you have pets, you can find hotels that accommodate your needs. If you prefer to eat before you go, you can research hotels that offer continental breakfast. If you’re using U-Haul for a one-way move, check out exclusive Wyndham hotel discounts for U-Haul customers or by calling the membership hotline at 1-800-364-6072. Please visit the U-Haul website for your discount ID.

Moving is a process on its own. Knowing that you have places to stay, sights to see and safe rest stops to stop at will better your moving experience.
