The boxes have been unpacked and you’ve settled into your new destination, congratulations! You’ve even started thinking about which gifts you’ll give to your moving helpers. The last item on your to-do list is to “return the moving van”. Here’s what to expect when returning a U-Haul truck.
Remove all personal items.
Make sure you’ve taken out every item from the truck rental. Check under the seats to make sure you’ve picked up all personal items as well as taking trash items, like bottles and food items, out. If your truck is dirty upon return a cleaning fee will be tacked onto your charges.
Bring proper paperwork.
Don’t forget the signed paperwork in your new home. If you have any questions or would like to address specific charges, then the paperwork will serve as a guide for all reference points. Bring with you proper identification and payment forms as in-town rentals and one-ways are charged in different ways. Also, the representatives at your location can answer all questions in person or over the phone.
Return vehicle on time (and with gas).
Follow all drop-off signs at the location to which you are returning (right). Make sure to read your contract carefully. It will have the specific time that the truck rental is due. Don’t forget to refuel the U-Haul van to the agreed upon amount as well. Returning a late moving truck that isn’t properly fueled will result in additional fees.
Follow all posted signs.
Drop off all equipment at the proper assigned location. Most locations will have directional signs that lead to the proper drop-off point. These signs will guide you to the correct location where a representative will then come and greet you. If there are not any signs, ensure that you’ve parked the moving van in a legal parking area as customers are responsible for all parking fees, tow charges and penalties.
Give it a final run through.
Secure all additional moving supplies, such as dollies and blankets, in the truck’s cab or in the trailer body in a folded and clean manner. Look through the trailer one final time to make sure all moving boxes and other materials have been removed or donated to U-Haul’s “take a box leave a box center”. Lock all doors and secure all padlocks before walking away from the vehicle.
Return the keys.
If returning during normal business hours, proceed to the U-Haul offices to return the truck keys. If you have any questions about returning your equipment, the customer service representatives are always available to help.
Return after business hours.
If returning after normal business hours, locate the key box that says “after hours” where you will safely place the truck keys. If returning after hours you will have simply follow all posted parking signs and drop off your keys in the drop box while following the posted instructions.
You’ve successfully completed each list off of your to-do list now! Make sure to always keep a copy of your contract as well as the names and numbers of the U-Haul representatives you worked with to contact them in the future if anything should arise. They can answer any and all questions before and after your trip.
