Ready to move to Dallas and root for Peruna at games? Congratulations on picking the Southern Methodist University in Texas as your college destination! You’ll be donning Harvard red and Yale blue as an SMU Mustang! Are you ready?
It’s time to sort out your housing situation in Dallas, so make sure you’ve applied early to live on-campus in one of the residential halls. Once admitted and assigned, you can start planning your move from home. It’s an exciting time, but being organized will help you start your college career off in the right direction!
Where To Live
The campus has 14 residence halls, but most incoming freshman are sorted into one of 11. All residential facilities will have a variety of rooms (from suites to shared) including private and shared bathrooms. However, all SMU residential facilities are co-ed, have common areas for studying and socializing, washers and dryers, air conditioned, carpeting and each room will have a bed, dresser, desk, and chair as well. Questions about the details of your specific room? Check out this page!
What To Leave
Because of fire safety regulations, there are a handful of items that are prohibited in the dorms, so make sure before packing up the moving truck that you’ve left these items back at home. Apart from this list, check out SMU’s Pinterest page with even more suggestions!
- Ornamental weapons
- Grills
- Phones/fax machines/wireless routers
- Pets (except for fish in a maximum 10-gallon tank)
- Candles
- Incandescent light bulbs
- Plug in air fresheners
- Electrical extension cords
- Multi-plug adapters
- Microwaves/hot plates
How To Bring It
If you’re driving from home to campus, the closest moving and storage location near the SMU campus will be in Lower Greenville, but there are plenty of other Dallas locations as well. However, if you’re wanting to avoid driving through the city, finding parking near campus and carrying all of your boxes, then consider shipping your belongings with Collegeboxes. You can pack your stuff at home, a carrier will pick them up, Collegeboxes will store them, and then deliver them to your dorm room by the time you move into school! This is how to move as quickly as a Mustang!
