Moving day. Let’s be honest, no one really looks forward to those words. Not only is it a lot of work, but you’re also packing up everything you own, putting it into a truck and moving someplace new where everyone’s a stranger. Because you have so many things on your mind, there are a lot of important things that are often overlooked that could cause some headaches when your move is over. This includes an inspection of your moving truck BEFORE you drive it.
This isn’t to say you need to get down on your hands and knees or crawl under the truck. There are several things you can check over in just a few minutes, and many truck rental companies will do this walk-around with you. Here’s a list of things to check.
Check for damage
Walk around the outside of the truck and look for any damage. After all, you don’t want to be charged for a dent that was already there when you picked up the truck. If you purchase damage coverage, you might not need to worry about this step, and many people think the extra few bucks are worth the added peace of mind. Be on the lookout for:
- Nicks
- Scratches
- Dents
- Broken glass
Check the fuel and mileage
Many trucks don’t get sent out with a full tank of gas; whatever your fuel level, your rental contract should report the correct amount. Don’t drive off until you turn on the engine and double-check this. Also, since you’re likely paying a mileage charge or are given a set amount of miles to use, double-check that the mileage is correct, as well.
If you drop off the truck after hours, take a photo of the fuel level and odometer, and hang on to your fuel receipts in case there are any discrepancies.
Check the oil and lights
Any reputable company will be sure that the oil and other fluid levels are where they should be before renting a truck to you. But there’s nothing wrong with checking them yourself just to be sure, especially if you’re driving a long way. Also, check the tire pressures and make sure all of the lights, including the brake lights, work properly.
Know how everything works
For most of us, renting a moving truck is the first time we’ve driven something so large, and there are a lot of gadgets and features we’re not used to. Before driving off, find all of the switches for the lights, turn signals, A/C and heat, radio dials, windshield wipers, etc. Also, open and close the cargo door so you know how to properly latch it, pull out the loading ramp and adjust all of the mirrors.
Taking a few minutes before you leave the rental company’s lot will come in handy while you’re on the road. Also, these easy steps could head off any hassles when you return the truck. Less stress? Who wouldn’t sign up for that during a move?!
