For many, moving out of your parent’s home is a rite of passage, and that’s not surprising. There aren’t many other moments in one’s life that make you feel more like an “adult” than turning the key and stepping into your very own apartment or house. But like most things, moving out of your parents home requires planning and hard work if you’re going to do it right. Here are some tips we think will help make the process easier for you.
Set Up a Packing Timeline
All those boxes won’t pack themselves! A packing timeline will help you make sure it all gets done in a timely manner, with minimal stress. Take some time to evaluate which items can be packed ahead of time to minimize last minute preparations. Also be sure to pack a box for the first night in your new residence that has all the necessities such as toiletries.
Research Which Size Truck You’ll Need
Since you’re just moving out of your parent’s house, it’s possible that you can get by with your own vehicle if you don’t have a lot of stuff to move. However, if your parents are letting you take furniture with you, or you have a decent amount of stuff, you’ll probably need a moving truck or trailer of some sort. Check out this size guide to begin your research.
Learn the In’s and Out’s of Renting or Buying
There’s a lot more to renting an apartment than just moving in and paying the landlord every month. Certain aspects of the move-in process are very important, especially signing the lease. Be sure to read up on what you can expect. The same goes if you’re buying a home. You won’t regret doing your homework.
Load Up on Cleaning Supplies and Other Household Necessities
Up until now, you’ve always been able to rely on using your parent’s supplies when you had to clean up the house. Now that you’re on your own, make sure you have everything you need to keep your residence clean and tidy. A broom, dustpan, vacuum cleaner, duster, gloves, window cleaner, degreaser, dishwashing soap, toilet brush, toilet bowl cleaner, and some rags should be a good start. You should also get some basic tools as well such as a screwdriver, hammer, scissors, pliers, and a wrench.
Change Your Address
Take a look at this Change of Address Checklist and make sure you contact everyone who needs to be notified. Also get in touch with the Postal Service to have your mail forwarded to the new address.
Bring Some Sentimental Items
You’re probably very excited to be out of your parents home, but sooner or later you’re probably going to start feeling a little homesick. Being apart from mom & dad for a long period of time will have that effect on anyone! Be sure to bring some photos and mementos to warm up your new house and bring a little bit of your family with you on your new journey!
