If you’re about to attend Tufts University, prepare to study at one of the top schools in the nation while living in a quaint New England setting.  Tufts was founded in 1852, and the main campus is located in Medford, Massachusetts.  The school currently has over 11,500 students at four campuses.  Before you hurry over to Medford, check out these school highlights and tips for making your trip go smoothly!

Academics

The Tufts University website says that “a great education stretches your mind, forces you to think about the world in different ways, and challenges you to examine your assumptions.” The university’s main campus in Medford contains five schools:6384674739322880

  • School of Arts and Sciences (undergraduate)
  • Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
  • School of Engineering (undergraduate)
  • Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy
  • Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service

The (undergraduate) School of Arts and Sciences offers more than 70 majors and minors, and the School of Engineering offers 10 majors. Tufts encourages a project-based learning environment, as well as creativity and problem-solving skills. Many professors at the university hold a Ph.D. and practice professionally in their fields.

Tufts utilizes study abroad programs, as well as programs across the US. About 40-45 percent of Tuft undergraduates participate in study abroad programs around the world. Students can study at Tufts’ overseas campus in France, select an outside pre-approved semester or year abroad program, or choose a Tufts program in countries like Chile, China, France, Germany, and many more!

Geographically, Tufts is the place to be. The campus is located on a hill about five miles northwest of Boston (mostly in Medford, but parts of the campus sit in Somerville). Students can enjoy a beautiful and peaceful campus, with the city only a short distance away.

Most undergraduate students reside on campus, along with
some graduate students. Approximately 3,400 students occupy 38 residences across campus. These residences divide into three categories: traditional residence halls, apartments/suite-style halls, and small group houses. While living at Tufts, you’ll find many places and activities, such as:

  • Nine food vendors across campus with an array of different flavors
  • The Elizabeth Van Huysen Mayer Campus Center—located in the center of campus—where students have access to meeting rooms, wireless internet, the bookstore and dining options
  • Over 300 student-run organizations like publications, student government, sports and community service

There are a million details to figure out when moving away to college, so don’t let your belongings weigh you down…literally.  Any items you don’t want to transport yourself can ship to your new school using Collegeboxes.  Simply pack up and wait for a courier to pick up your items at home!  Your boxes will be shipped to a secure climate controlled storage facility near campus, then taken to your room on the scheduled delivery date.  With Collegeboxes, you can easily settle into your “home away from home,” as Tufts calls their campus.  If you prefer to keep your items close, give yourself plenty of space with a moving truck or trailer.
