Mar 20, 2019

Spring is just around the corner which means warmer weather if you’re lucky. Before you throw your coats and heavy winter clothing into trash bags in the corner of your closet, let us fill you in on the importance of correctly storing winter clothes. Unfortunately, winter will be back again so, you’ll want to preserve those nice winter coats until then. Luckily, we have the perfect supplies for storing winter clothes.

Storing winter clothes

The most important part of storing winter clothes is to do it correctly. All of those jackets and sweaters weren’t cheap. They need to be taken care of properly. Likewise, it will allow you to declutter and clean out your closet to make space for your spring and summer wardrobe! So, read on for our 5 tips for storing winter clothes:

  1. Keep a few transitional pieces. If the weather is starting to warm up but isn’t quite summer yet, keep a few transitional items out for chilly days. Think warm but lightweight and layerable pieces, like a cardigan or sweater.
  2. Clean, clean, clean! Even if there isn’t any visible dirt, it’s a good idea to wash your winter clothes to avoid any unseen stains sinking in while in storage. You will be glad that you cleaned your clothes before storing them next winter.
  3. Choose the right box. So, since your winter clothes will be in storage for a few months, choosing the right box is a very important step. Certainly, U-Haul wardrobe boxes are the perfect solution to storing winter clothes. These boxes allow you to keep your clothes on the hanger as they come with a metal hanging bar inside. 4. Maximize space. If you live in a small home or just don’t have much storage space, then our space bags are a great solution for storing winter clothes. These bags allow you to store items in a fraction of the space they normally occupy by enabling you to vacuum the air out of the bag. Airtight, waterproof, and reusable, these bags are guaranteed to keep your clothes safe. Our space bags are available in store and online in a variety of sizes.

5. Choose the right spot. Meanwhile, the basement, attic, or garage may be a good place to store some household items, it is not a good place for storing winter clothes. These places are usually quite dusty, can be humid and rarely temperature controlled. We recommend the back of the closet, behind the couch, under your bed, or in a storage closet if you have one.

Don’t have space in your house? No worries, you can store your winter clothes in a climate-controlled unit at a U-Haul storage location near you.
