Safety When Moving with Children

dangers of moving with kids
Don’t let this be your kid. Keep them happy on moving day!

Moving day presents new safety considerations that you don’t have to think about every day. Moving large furniture, coordinating the moving truck, people running in and out of the house, last-minute packing and cleaning; the list goes on. When you are moving with children, this adds yet another element. But don’t worry, by following a few moving day rules of thumb, your move will be safe for your entire family.

Store moving supplies safe and away.

Packing and moving requires a variety of moving supplies, some of which are best kept out of reach from children. Items such as box cutters, tape dispensers and dollies should  be stored somewhere the children can’t get to. Consider placing these items in drawers, tall cabinets or on high counters.

Though some things such as boxes and bubble wrap may seem harmless, it is never advisable to let your child play with these supplies unattended. It might seem safe to leave boxes or packing peanuts lying around but it’s best to make sure all  moving materials are stored in an area that is out of your child’s reach. Packing peanuts and bubble wrap can be choking hazards. Boxes have fairly sharp edges, and children will trip and fall over anything. Take that extra step and keep all moving supplies away from children.

Watch out for children when moving large items.

When moving large items in and out of the house, your vision can become obstructed, especially when it comes to small things in your path- like children. Make sure your children are out of the way when you are loading and unloading the moving truck. Consider giving them games and activities to do in separate room to keep them busy, or hire a sitter to watch them.

It’s easy to get caught up in moving day activities, there is surely a lot going on. Check up on them every so often, make sure they’re staying put and not getting into trouble. Keep them hydrated and give them snacks here and there. A hungry child is a grumpy child, and a grumpy child means you’re going to have a bad time. Avoid the drama and keep an eye on your children.

Though the dangers of moving with children are easy to overlook, as long as parents put in a little thought and planning, the move will run smoothly. Take precautionary measures to keep your children safe during your move and you’ll have peace of mind along with an easier move!
