Packing tape? Check. Boxes? Check. Band-aids for the cut you got lifting the dresser? …Check? Before you begin to pack up your moving truck or vehicle for your move, don’t forget to bring an emergency moving kit as injuries can occur. Here’s a list of some items to include:
Band-aids: When handling cardboard boxes, tape and furniture, getting a cut isn’t unlikely. Even for something as small as a papercut, it’s a good idea to have band-aids ready to help protect the wound.
Gauze: Let’s hope you don’t need this but in case a more serious injury does occur, you’ll be happy to have it in your kit. For large cuts or even burns, clean the wound and then carefully wrap it.
Anti-bacterial cream: After you thoroughly cleaned the wound, spread on a thin layer of anti-bacterial ointment. This will prevent unwanted bacteria from infecting the area.
Water: Keep yourself hydrated! Drinking water is extremely important when lifting heavy objects and being on your feet for hours at a time. This is especially crucial during the hot summer months when most moving occurs.
Aspirin: Headaches happen. So do bumps and bruises. That’s why it’s important to have aspirin on hand. But remember, if you strain your body or feel seriously ill, sit down and take a break. Your health is more important than finishing ahead of schedule.
Prescription medications: Even if you already took your medication for the day, put it in the Emergency Kit. It’s especially important to put in medications that need to be taken in emergency situations, such as an inhaler if you have asthma or an EpiPen for allergies.
Instant ice pack: Carrying awkward, heavy objects like furniture often means bumping into walls and getting bruises. Instant ice packs are a quick fix to prevent swelling and help reduce pain.
Sunscreen: When you are outside for long periods of time you expose your skin to harmful UV rays. Applying sunscreen every couple of hours will protect your skin from painful sunburns. Pair this with the right moving day attire and you’re set!
Remember to keep this kit accessible and if you’re seriously injured, find an urgent care center, go to a local hospital, or call 9-1-1.
