There are few cities greener than Portland. In fact, it is sometimes referred to as the City of Roses because of the many rose gardens found within its limits. If you are moving there soon, or perhaps have already made it your home, one of the most important things you need to do is get acquainted with the city. Here are a few notable topics you should look into upon arrival.
Learn the History
When it comes to history, Portland is in no short supply! One spot we definitely recommend checking out is the Pittock Mansion. It features an incredible view of the city’s skyline and an inside look at the home of one of Portland’s wealthiest historical residents, Henry Pittock. We also think the Oregon Historical Society is a must-see, as it is home to some incredible pieces of the city’s history, including “the Portland Penny” which helped name the city.
Just for Fun
If you want a taste of Portland’s famed greenery, one of the first things on your list should be Forest Park. It is one of our nation’s largest urban forest reserves, so be prepared for a full day of nature! Another famed stop in Portland is a bookstore so large that they offer maps to help customers find their way around the store. Powell’s City of Books has been around since 1971 and was rated one of the ten coolest bookstores in the world by CNN. Last but not least, we should mention there is no sales tax in Oregon, which means shopping is always a good decision while you’re there!
If you’re looking for great eats, Portland without a doubt delivers some tasty options. One trend that is catching on is the concept of “farm to table” restaurants such as Clyde Common. You’ll have a hard time finding fresher food because these restaurants get their ingredients straight from the farm! Portland also claims to have more food trucks than any other city. One of the most well known is Nong’s Khao Man Gai, but there are over 600 other options to choose from as well!
