Renting a U-Haul truck or trailer is simpler than you might think. You do not need a special driver’s license to rent U-Haul equipment.
All that’s required is a valid, government-issued driver’s license, the same one you use to drive your everyday vehicle. Since U-Haul trucks are not considered commercial vehicles, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or any special endorsement is not required.
Please note that digital licenses are not accepted, as you must present a physical, government-issued license.
Exception: In Quebec, a Class 3 Driver’s License is required to operate a 26′ truck.
What this Means to You
- No CDL needed
- No special endorsements needed
- Just bring your standard government-issued driver’s license
If you still have questions about whether your specific license qualifies, we recommend finding a location near you and giving them a call. Local staff will be familiar with the requirements in your area and can give you the most accurate guidance.
